COMMITMENT SUNDAY – OCTOBER 22

The theme for the stewardship emphasis this year is, “Common Hope, Common Trust.”  Our common hope is that we will achieve a balanced operating budget for 2007, while fulfilling our mission as a church.  Our common trust is that we, as individual members and as a congregation, will plan our giving to attain that goal.

During the service on Sunday, October 22, you will have the opportunity to present your plan of giving to the church.

                                                                                                With hope and trust —

                                                                                                Marjorie Collins,

                                                                                                Stewardship Chair

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1

RECONCILIATION OFFERING – OCTOBER 1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,

Hebrews 12:1-2 is the focus for this year’s special offering for Reconciliation.

Reconciliation has been a part of our denomination’s witness since 1965.  However, until about 10 years ago, most of the funds were directed toward poverty.  We need to eradicate poverty, yes, and many good and effective ministries happened during those nearly 30 years of the special ministry, but we have learned in our church and society that in order to end poverty we need to work to change the structures that create it—one of which is racismthe sin that clings so closely.

Today, with changes made at every level of our general church, our Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation program is in need of transformation yet again.  With over 20 anti-racism teams active throughout the regions and units of our church, we are learning the depth and insidious nature of racism, as well as the ways we can change its pervasive force in our churches and the life of our faith.

Please give generously to this offering today, and pray for all the teams throughout the life of our Disciples Church, as well as for the people (our own Regional Minister, Ron Parker is a member) who are meeting over the next 6 months or so to assess and to guide the direction and future of this work in our denomination and churches.

and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,…

Janet Barriger

            Dear Mr. Terry Zimmerman,

            Aloha!

I am writing to thank the congregation of First Christian Church, all of the volunteers, whom serve meals Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I am very appreciative for the kindness, and the loving service, and the desserts, and the orange juice, the spectacular salads are pretty; as well as delicious!

The Boulder Bucks are an added bonus for sure; seven dollars weekly is quite a Blessing indeed.

                                                                                    Godspeed,

                                                                                    Kathleen Wilson

WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER

Al Denton, Kathleen Grooters, Rev. Gay Hatler, Barbara Johnson, Pauline Matteson, Sherrill Morris, Nelson Shepherd, Site Selection Committee (Café), John Stickle.  Welcome to the world, Cade Michael Koshio (grandson of Barb & Gordon Koshio).

LIFE AND NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

*Heather Avens and Steve Kadlec have accepted a baby referral!  She was born in Korea on August 8th.  They are anxiously awaiting her arrival here around the end of this year or the start of the next.

*Janet Barriger reports she successfully PASSED her meeting/appearance with the ACPE Certification Commission on September 14 and is now a certified FULL ACPE (Assoc. of Clinical Pastoral Education) SUPERVISOR!!!  “It feels great to be

FINALLY finished with all my certification for ACPE, and finally just a plain old

‘CPE Supervisor’ (no more candidate or associate in front of my name, and no

               more committees to meet!!!).”

*

We recently received word of the death of Martha Riester, mother of Chuck Riester.  Mrs. Riester had just celebrated her 96th birthday.  Chuck and Sally have been living in Salt Lake City where he took a 3-month contract, but should be back home in Tucson

               by now.

*Nelson Shepherd under went an emergency procedure to replace a bile duct stent on September 17th.  He may have follow up work done at University Hospital, Denver.

*Our Youth Director, Sherrill Morris had back surgery on September 22nd at St. Anthony Central Medical Center.  At this writing, she is still at St. Anthony Central recuperating.

*Thanks to Eleanor Hubbard who coordinated the panel discussion held in our sanctuary on September 19th and to David Shepherd who was our sound technician for the night.  And thanks to all who furnished cookies too!

*In a recent pastoral letter from our Regional Minister Ron Parker, we learned that Gay Hatler, minister of First Christian Church in Colorado Springs, recently had extensive, but seemingly successful, surgery for cancer.

*To the list of the many places Keith Lance has visited, please add Portugal!  He was invited there to present a paper because of his library expertise.

*Congratulations to Gordon & Barbara Koshio on the birth of their first grandchild, Cade.  According to Barbara, they are spending lots of time getting acquainted with the little guy.

IN SYMPATHY

Our love, prayers and sympathy are shared with Kathleen Grooters and family upon the death of her husband, the Reverend Donald Grooters, on September 15th.  Services for Don, an ordained Methodist minister, were held on September 22nd at First United Methodist Church in Longmont where he served for many years.

THANK YOU

We were so surprised to receive such lovely cards of congratulation on the celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary from our church family!  Thank you for your lovely sentiments and well wishes.  Jan and Bill Einert.

CROP WALK

WHAT  AND WHEN:

The 2006 Boulder County CROP WALK is Sunday October 8th at 2:00 p.m. starting at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 4775 Cambridge St., Boulder.  Join hands with many of our neighboring churches as we reach out to feed God's people around the block and around the world.  Pick up you sponsor form from Heather Avens on Sunday October 1 or the morning of the walk.

Together... we can make a difference.  Please walk, sponsor a walker and pray for all those walking and for those who are hungry.  Please contact Heather Avens for more information at 720.890.1252, or heatheravens@yahoo.com.

WHY:

WE WALK BECAUSE THEY WALK...

Jean D'Amore Twagirimana....

Jean D'Amore Twagirimana is twelve and the sole supporter of his sisters Clementine, five and Clair, seven.  He remembers well his mother's final words to him, "I am dying of AIDS," she told him, "You must be the strong one now.  Take care of your sisters.  Keep this house."  Jean has managed to do that, with the help of the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association), Church World Service's local partner in Gitarama, Rwanda, an area devastated by the AIDS pandemic.  Jean and his sisters have been given a goat and food, and Jean somehow keeps his family fed and safe.  Even with all of his responsibilities, Jean continues to attend school, where he ranks third in his class.  He admits the scariest time for him is at night.

CROP WALKERS are providing help and hope to child-headed households in Africa.  You are changing the world...one step at a time!

                                                                                                Heather Avens

AN UNEXPECTED DONATION

An unexpected donation to the First Christian Church general operating fund was received this week from Gary Steiner and the bridge group which leases Riley Hall for their weekly event.  Because of the help and cooperation of our parking committee in securing parking spaces for the bridge club during the construction at Golden West, what could have been a problem became a gift!  Thanks!

FEED THE STUDENTS!

I know I don't have to tell anyone in this congregation how important food is for fellowship. Home-cooked meals provided by local churches are one of the central events at United Ministries in Higher Education's weekly ecumenical meetings.  FCC's days for providing food this fall are Wednesday, October 11th and Wednesday, November 8th.  Please contact Heather Avens if you would be willing to provide something yummy!  (Also, now that I have a car there are more options for how we can deliver the food to the UMHE house – so please don't hesitate to cook based on transportation concerns!)

Thanks, Heather Avens

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: DID YOU REMEMBER TO BUY YOUR GROCERY CERTIFICATES LAST SUNDAY?

For any new or long-time members who don't know, FCC sells grocery certificates to help support the church programs.  We buy them in bulk at about a 5% discount, and sell them at face value for your use.  Therefore, you can help the church earn 5% on your monthly food expenses – with no additional out-of-pocket expense to you.  It just takes a little planning.  We sell certificates for King Soopers and Safeway, and have Albertson's cards which you present during checkout.  It's also worth noting that you can use the certificates to pay for prescriptions at the supermarket pharmacies.

Please see Dale Abel, Marilyn Howell, or Erik Mason before or after service on Sunday.  The three of us are making the effort to be sure someone is available on the first and third Sundays of each month, conveniently following payday :-).  If you go to the early service at Golden West, the certificates are also available from Linda at the church office during the week.  If you are unable to get to the office, please let Linda know, and we will see what other arrangements can be made.

If you have questions about the certificates program, please contact Dale Abel.  Thank you… and remember, eat up.

                                                                                                Dale Abel

COMMUNITY TABLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Community Table is now serving more than 100 people on Thursday nights.  This is great news because it means that fewer people are going hungry.  The huge increase on Thursday is because attendees are now receiving $7 in Boulder Change to buy food for Friday and Saturday.  CT has been trying to arrange Friday meals for a long time since many of our guests were not eating from Thursday night until Sunday when the downtown churches serve lunch.

But, because FCC serves on the third Thursday of each month, we are very short of help.  We serve in two shifts: the first shift works from 3:45 to 5:10 and the second shift from 5:00 until they are finished, usually about 6:30.  Right now some people are working both shifts, but we would prefer not to do that.  If you could help with this very personal, important outreach project, please email me at rccamp1@msn.com and I will get you on the list.  You can volunteer to work every month or be on the substitute list.  Those people currently on the substitute list would be particularly glad to have more people; often they have been asked to serve every month.

Thanks,

Rosie

He grudgingly takes the child home, and through his efforts to care for the tyke, Tsotsi slowly rediscovers his compassion, self-respect and capacity to love.
