GREAT RESPONSE TO OUTREACH REQUEST!!

Give yourself a pat on the back!  Thanks to everyone who contributed so generously to the project to furnish school rooms in Mukjar, Darfur, Africa!!  A total of $2855 was contributed to this project, via Mercy Corps, for equipment needed in the school rooms being built by Alan Bennett, a former active member here at FCC Boulder.

The Outreach Committee also appreciates that Steve Crowder and Joann Dennett brought this project forward for action and helped to publicize the effort.

CORN MAZE!

(and no, Terry, that’s not redundant, that would be corn maize!)  But anyhow…

October 22nd, the Youth from FCC will join the youth from metro area churches – Central Christian, Harvey Park, Mountair, Highland (and maybe some others!) – as we explore a corn maze!

Located at Chatfield Reservoir, the Denver Botanical Gardens have an eight-acre corn maze for all to enjoy!

We will attend early service at Golden West, at 8:30 a.m. then go to our Sunday School classes.  After Sunday School, we will meet in the youth room and get ready to leave.

We will meet the other youth at a McDonald’s near the reservoir for food and fellowship before the maze.  Youth must attend early worship to attend the event!  Youth Group will pay the entry fee, but youth should bring lunch money.

Please RSVP by October 16th to Sherrill at 303.329.8122 so we can plan our transportation.  ALL youth, 6th – 12th grades are invited!

                                                                                                Sherrill Morris, Youth Director

NEWS FROM PRISCILLA INKPEN

Priscilla's partner has taken a job in Cambridge, UK, probably for 2 years.  Pending approval of a work permit (which is not expected to be a problem), they'll be moving by the end of the year.  While Paula is managing a software test group, Priscilla will be figuring out what's next for her.  Volunteer activist, educational, or church work?  Learning Spanish?  Voice lessons?  Tracing family tree (grandparents were from Scotland)?  Totally unforeseen activities....?

Added note from Priscilla: (unlike the US) domestic partnership is totally legally accepted in the UK.  If Paula were a Brit trying to work in the US, Priscilla would not even be able to come along!  This is a huge problem for US GLBTQs who have international partners.  Another reason to VOTE YES on REFERENDUM I on November 7th – it wouldn't solve the international partner issue, but it's at least a step in the right direction!

SHOWING OF AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30TH.

The Outreach Committee agreed to participate with Naropa University in a showing of the powerful film about global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.  Paramount Pictures is loaning free copies of the film to Christian and Jewish congregations, to encourage religious communities to take a role in dealing with this threatening global phenomenon.  Some other congregations are also being invited to attend, so the showing will be an interfaith event.

SO--you are invited to attend this free showing of the film.  It will be shown Monday, October 30th at 7:00 p.m. in Shambhala Hall at Naropa (directions below).  Priscilla Inkpen will be leading a discussion of the film and our response at the FCCafé on the following Sunday, November 5th.

Directions:  Arapahoe to 20th St. – turn south on 20th (corner with Daddy Bruce's BBQ).  Make the first left onto Marine St. and go a short block.  There's a parking lot on the left; at the very end of Marine is another parking lot.  You can park in either one.  Follow signs to Shambhala Hall, which is located on the second floor of the red brick building.

The Way of the Kitchen, or Eating to Change the World

How to achieve good health and reform the world, all from the humble dinner table.

Who would guess that the dinner table can be a powerful pathway for change, both for ourselves and our world.  But here is the problem: "Eating aware" people can hardly make a difference when our lives are so hectic that even ordering takeout is a stretch.  Happily, author Mary Collette Rogers has discovered that busy people don't have to be hostages to take out and fast foods.  In this interactive talk, she reveals the secret for eating in a way that matches our ideals--even with impossibly busy lives.  Learn about the many positive impacts that can be brought about by conscious food and eating choices and how to unlock the life-changing potential hidden in the humble kitchen.

Mary Collette Rogers has witnessed the power of good eating.  When her children were quite young, they suffered serious illnesses which she was able to cure through nutritional therapy.  Since that time, she developed a nutrition and meal management software program and most recently authored Take Control of Your Kitchen, both products designed to help busy people tap into the joys of the kitchen and the healthful riches of good food.  She loves to inspire fun and creativity in the kitchen while sharing the helpful insights, tips and strategies gathered over 15 years in the healthy eating and cooking fields.
