YET ANOTHER REASON TO GIVE THANKS

“Count your blessings, name them one by one…”

And our most recent blessing is named Dustin Adkins.  Dustin, our new youth director, joined our staff the first Sunday of November.  You hopefully had an opportunity to meet and get acquainted with him following worship that day—or perhaps have seen him up front during the Children’s Time.  (He’s the one who is as big as our “permanent” child, Dale Abel.)

Dustin received his bachelor’s degree in Ministry (with a minor in Psychology) from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN in 1998.  While still in Nashville he served the Forest Hills Church of Christ as worship leader and taught the high school church school class.  After moving to Denver he was Youth Ministry Coordinator / Impact Minister of South Broadway Christian Church through April 2006.  He still is caretaker of that church facility in addition to his “day job” as agent for a Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage office in Denver.

This enthusiastic young man fills a very important role in our congregation: ministering to – and

through – our youth.  Make it a point to welcome and support him as we work and fellowship together.

Fourteen Disciples colleges & universities and seven theological institutions receive support from the Thanksgiving offering which will be received on November 18th.

Thank you,

The Outreach Committee

HOLIDAY DRESS-A-CHILD 2007

Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home

It’s time for the Tennyson Center’s annual Dress-A-Child event!  FCC has a long history of participating in this heart-warming project and this year, we continue the tradition.

We have “adopted” 3 children.  We were assigned 3 boys and have received the list of needs for each one.  Carol Ashmore and Kay Lowe-Wendling are the most careful shoppers you can imagine.

They found a day when the local Kohl’s department store had a huge sale: 50% off plus an in-store “Senior’s Discount.”  (Do you suppose Kohl’s should have asked for their ID’s?)  FCC donors to the Dress-A-Child program surely got the most for their money!  Besides the clothing, we are asked to provide $40.00 per child for shoes.  Can you visualize the joy “our” boys will experience with new sweaters, jeans, pajamas, and shirts – Plus new shoes?

Disciple Women budget $200.00 each year for this cause and the Deborah-Rebekah group also gives from their funds.  All other gifts are generously contributed by members of the FCC community.

Checks made out to Disciple Women may be placed in the offering trays or given to Louise

Johnson.  Merry Christmas for 3 boys at the Tennyson Center!

PRAYERS STILL NEEDED FOR AIDAN IMMROTH

Many of you may recall Aidan Immroth, the grandson of a friend of mine who has spent most of his young life battling brain tumors.  The original one was conquered with chemotherapy, but he’s developed another one on the optic nerves.  So, now his family has the specific worry of him losing his eyesight, in addition to the general threat to his life.  Following is a report from his grandmother, Prof. Barbara Immroth, which she asked me to pass along to all of those who have prayed for Aidan during his many turns on our prayer list.

Keith Lance

Aidan update:  He's in weekly chemo at M.D. Anderson - the tumor on the optic nerves is shrinking and he'll probably be in chemo until spring.  He's in 4th grade - still in dual language and doing well with Spanish.  He's also studying mythology which he's enjoying.  He's taken up the flute and is learning some Christmas carols - which he began in the summer because his teacher wanted him to know some carols by Christmas!  He's also taking tennis lessons at Rice University with a college student there.  He still loves to do handwork and learned crochet from his cousin last summer.  He makes gifts - last time I was visiting he made me a knitted glasses case.  He had an assignment to visit a museum - so we went to the Menil one afternoon.  This year he drew a picture for a page of the month by month calendar and a picture of a white/brown spotted cow for a board book called Animal Parade - also children's thank you notes from those pictures -- http://www.childrensartproject.org/  Hallie [Aidan’s mother] sent me the message from a photographer at a Children's Art Project event.  A good shot of Aidan is  0455_0019.jpg (Sorry I have no idea of how to send you only that one.)

Please share with your church members and thank them from the family for keeping him in their prayers.

Very best, Barbara (Grandmother of Aidan and friend of Keith Lance)

BAG MAKERS, BREAD BAKERS AND HAND SHAKERS

Only visitors to FCC receive the gift of Brown Bag Bread (try saying that three times fast!).  This important ministry is made possible by a small group of very dedicated volunteers from our church family.

In this season of Thanksgiving I would like to recognize each of the ones who serve as greeters or do the labor behind the scenes.  Vera Jones prepares the bags, beginning with attaching small rope handles to the bags and tucking a sheet of red tissue inside them.  She then adds a card which reads:

YOU BROKE BREAD WITH US THIS MORNING - LET US BREAK

BREAD WITH YOU THIS WEEK

CHURCH SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES 9:30 A.M. WORSHIP 10:45 A.M.

THERE'S A PLACE FOR YOU AT OUR TABLE.

Jeannine Henderson is kept quite busy baking small loaves of bread and small loaves of bread and……….. to keep the church freezer supplied.

On Sunday morning, the designated Greeter places a loaf of bread in the bag and adds a copy of the latest issue of The Ram’s Horn.  Greeters are rewarded with big smiles and pleased expressions when a visitor is presented with our gift.

This important ministry adds to our commitment to be a “Welcoming Church” and is only kept “in business” by the following members of our faith community.  Please give them your thanks – a phone call, a pat on the back or (GASP) a thank you note in their mailbox.

Vera Jones     Jeannine Henderson     Martha Mason

Mary ann Pinon     Marcie Geissinger     The Dale & Melanie Abel Family

Jean Crowder     Jan and Bill Einert

And during the choir’s summer hiatus Erik Mason, Milton and Carol Ashmore, and Jane Byers also served as greeters.

God bless you, each one.

LIFE & NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Watching grandchildren play sports is a wonderful reason to travel!  Just ask Marcie

Geissinger and Neil Ashby who flew to Austin, Texas for that very reason.

A sadder reason for a trip is to visit an ailing grandmother.  Jen Sullivan recently made a trip to Wisconsin.

It will be an especially nice Thanksgiving for Cindy and Terry Zimmerman.  Terry’s sister, Barbara, will be visiting from California!

Linda Abel seems to be magnetic and it isn’t a good thing!  Twice in the last 2 months her car has been hit from behind.  Luckily, she wasn’t hurt on either occasion.

Congratulations to our Youth Director, Dustin Adkins, and his partner, Justin Wilcox, who celebrated their 5th anniversary on November 11th!

Thank you to Carol Ashmore for being our Table Hostess at the Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home dinner last week!

A BIG THANK YOU to Hugh Crowder who has served as our Café Committee (property relocation) chairman for the last 2 years!

Another long list of “thank you” goes to the following from our church family who were presenters at the FCCafé in 2007:  Laura Burright, Hugh Crowder (twice), Marcie Geissinger & Neil Ashby, Maggie Haseman, Keith Lance, Kay Norris, Erik Mason, Martha Mason (twice), Mary ann Pinon, Sady Swanson, Alie Wilkins-Crowder, Cindy

& Terry Zimmerman, and rounding out the year Jeff Hogan and Mary & Willie Rios!

Congratulations to Daniel Abel upon being selected by his teacher to be on the Student Council!  Daniel is a first grader at Campbell Elementary School.

We received a cheery note from Dorothy Rosenberger along with their order for a poinsettia.  She stated that she still misses the church, choir and bell choir.  She asks that we give greetings to all members she knew in the church.

Our love and sympathy are extended to Lois Wright upon the death of her sister, Josie Brown Williams, who died in Texas at the age of 100.

IN SYMPATHY

Our prayers and love go to the family of Ferne Denton who died on October 26th.  Ferne’s husband, Al, died just one year and two weeks earlier.  A Celebration of Life was shared on November 9th in our sanctuary with Rev. Zimmerman officiating.  Their daughter Pat and son Jere survive.

COMMON TABLES

“When millions of people gather to break bread and discover common stories, they create space in which new stories can be written together.”

Today there is good news!  A new organization has been formed which presents each of us with the opportunity to take an active role in determining our collective destiny.  The organization is called Common Tables.  The fundamental idea is to empower each of us to be “the change we want to see in the world.”

Common Tables was created to start at the grass roots level and to help create environments in which friendships can be built which transcend religious, cultural, ethnic, political and lifestyle differences.

What does Common Tables do?  We provide opportunity and encouragement for people of differing religious, spiritual or philosophical beliefs to come together in relaxed social settings and to get to know one another as individuals.

How does that work?  Briefly, when you join Common Tables as an individual or with a partner you will be introduced into a diverse group called a “Table” located in your general geographic area.  Over the following six months you will get together four times – usually for dinner and usually in a Table member’s home.  There is of course more to the process and you can find out a lot more about Common Tables by visiting our website at www.CommonTables.org.

THANK YOU!

A very special thank you to all the people from First Christian Church who attended and contributed to the Colorado Christian Home at their annual Denver   Dinner and to the people from FCC who contributed even though they could not attend.

It was a wonderful evening with cocktails, dinner, a program, and dancing.  $503,000 was raised.  This amount exceeded their goal of $450,000.

The Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home has evolved into the largest residential day treatment center in the Rocky Mountain Region providing treatment and special education for children ages 5 to 14 and families for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or emotional trauma.  In 2006 Colorado Christian Home helped over 625 children and an additional 1, 586 of their family members.

We are always amazed at how many people for First Christian Church have attended these dinners over the years.

Thank you again for all your support, both past and present, for Colorado Christian Home.  What a great, generous group of people you are!
