WHAT FEEDS YOU?

In your life, what feeds you?  Besides potlucks, of course.  Over the coming months, the Elders and Board of the church will start a dialog about what we, as church and individually, find spiritually and emotionally nourishing in our lives.  The idea for this dialog comes out of a meeting that the leadership of the church held to discuss the results of the discernment report.  To better understand the feelings expressed in the report, we decided to explore what each of us finds energizing.  We hope that a fuller understanding of what “feeds” each of us will allow for a better alignment of the life and work of the church with the needs of the congregation.

To start this dialog, over the next few months the Elders and Board will be speaking in worship during the offering meditation spot about what they find spiritually and emotionally nourishing.  I encourage everyone to ponder “What feeds you?” as part of the ongoing discernment process of our congregation.

Erik Mason,

President of the Congregation

Thanks to new member Helen Wagner for leading the Children’s Time last Sunday.

Mary ann Pinon traveled to Minneapolis to hear her granddaughter’s gospel group perform at

the University of Minnesota.

College friends soon returning to the Boulder area for the summer:  Shawn Crowder and Erica Haseman.  Welcome home!  Hope to hear from you both as providers of “special music” soon!

We are happy to report that Sandy Bish is doing very well following her recent ACL surgery!

Linda and Mike Abel will soon be off to Boston to visit son, Joe, who is stationed there with the Coast Guard.

Congratulations to Lindsay Stickle who graduated this week from CU with a 4.0 GPA.  Way to go Lindsay!

IT TAKES A VILLAGE....

.....to take care of me!  My surgery a few weeks ago to reconstruct my ACL ligament in my knee kicked me in the butt.  Even though I've been through this twice before, I had somehow forgotten how challenging this would be.  Thanks be to New Women and the others from FCC who saved the day!  Between babysitting (me), providing food, making runs to the pharmacy, moving furniture, buying ice, visiting, loaning equipment, prayers, calls, cards, and more, you all got me through this!  I am now hobbling along on 2 feet, driving, and going to work.  I have PT in front of me, but I am definitely out of the woods.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!  I love you all!

Sandy Bish

The summer schedule begins on Sunday, June 3.  Worship at Golden West remains the same, 8:30 a.m.  The sanctuary worship starts at 10:00 a.m.  This year the adult Bible study and FCCafé will not be held during the summer.  However there will be a class during the worship time for nursery through grade three.

YOUTH GROUP THANK YOUS!

Youth Group would like to extend two huge thank yous, one to Vickie Thompson who drove to the bowling alley and one to Willie Rios, who did everything else on our retreat, April 20th and 21st.  Despite the water guns, Vaseline and cottonballs, donuts on strings, blindfolds and chocolate syrup, Willie remained gracious and talented in his humorous leadership.  Ask him or any youth about it!

ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE OF HAZELMAE & JOSEPH TEMPLE

FCC recently received $594.80 from the Christian Church Foundation as the annual income distribution (interest) from the trust of Hazelmae and Joseph Temple, parents of Joann Dennett.  FCC is honored to be the recipient of this living memorial to Hazelmae and Joe, and we give thanks for Joann’s thoughtfulness in establishing this trust in memory of her parents.  This projected amount is an investment income line item on the budget each November.

UPDATE ON PROPERTY SALE

The FCC team (Attorney Brendan Chatham, Hugh Crowder, Marcie Geissinger, and Eleanor Hubbard) met with the Chanin and Golden West (GW) teams on Friday, May 4th—continuing with the objective of securing the vacation by GW of the ingress/egress easement across the FCC south parking lot.  Chanin presented his re‑designs for the FCC property based on the comments and requests from GW at the March 23 meeting.  He also responded in a positive manner to requests from GW at this May 4th meeting.

Chanin asked GW for a decision within two weeks.  GW has scheduled an Operating Board meeting for May 11.  The good news is that FCC (and Chanin) will have a decision (possibly by the time you read this) and can move forward to the next step—whatever that is!

Marcie Geissinger, Chair, Trustees

SEPTEMBER OPERA TRIP

Mardi Byers sings at the NYC Opera this fall, and a contingent of FCC will be in attendance.

Although Mardi sings at 8 performances of Don Giovanni in September and October, Jane and her groupies will be going to the September 22nd performance, 8:00 p.m.  Everyone who goes must make their own arrangements including:  purchasing their own airline tickets, hotel accommodations, and tickets to the NYC Opera, but it would be fun to be in the same places.  If you are interested in going and would like more information about Jane's plans (when, where, etc.), give Eleanor Hubbard a call

303.494.9718 or email hubbarde@colorado.edu and she will let you know the details that are being worked out.

FCCAFÉ ON SUNDAY, MAY 13:

SOWING SEEDS OF SUSTAINABILITY IN JALAPA, NICARAGUA

Boulder Jalapa Friendship City Projects (FCP), formed in 1983, has had a presence in the Jalapa Valley in northern Nicaragua for more than 20 years.  This non-profit organization is dedicated to building peace and understanding between the people of Nicaragua and Colorado.  Friendship City Projects, Inc. funds projects that have a social contract to create community and work for the greater good of its residents and fosters people-to-people diplomacy through organizing delegations to and from Nicaragua.  The project provides the framework that enables skilled volunteers to work in the Jalapa area of Nicaragua providing direct services and/or technical assistance.

FCP's present program is one of encouraging sustainable family agriculture in Jalapa.  A huertos is a system of vegetable gardens, small domestic animals, medicinal trees and plants, fruit trees, and timber, and organic fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides that make families self-sufficient.  The huertos familiares movement is sweeping Central America as campesinos respond to the grinding poverty produced by "Free Trade," and decades of intervention by corporations, and international financial institutions and governments in their internal economy.

FCP's current in-country representative, Tamara Czyzyk, arrived in Jalapa in Oct. 2005.  She has facilitated the planning process whereby Pueblos Unidos, our sister board in Jalapa, identified as its top priority community organization around family agriculture.  She has also networked with a number of organizations in the region to produce workshops on various aspects of these family gardens, including organics, vermiculture, biodigestors, alternative (and efficient) stove technology, saving seeds, and nutrition.  Tamara will show slides and a video of these activities and of the 22 highly successful huertos in the barrio of El Polvorin.  Come see why Jalapa has been called the Breadbasket of Nicaragua, and what self reliance looks like.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN'S CANNED FOOD DRIVE

Later in the summer (July to be exact) the adults will take up an offering for the food closet at BCAP (Boulder County AIDS Project).  But the youth and children are having a canned food drive right now!  On the chancel will be a place for children and youth (and anyone else young at heart!) to place cans of nutritious food during the children’s sermon.  BCAP especially needs high protein foods, like peanut butter and canned meats, as well as foods that might get your attention when you didn't have much of an appetite, like ravioli!  Last week, Helen (in the children’s sermon) spoke about the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.  Let's make our own miracle and feed as many people as we can.  (No pun intended, that's Terry's job).

Sherrill Morris, Youth Director
