ON THE BOARD WALK

We wanted to report to you about the Congregational meeting held on Sunday, April 30th.  We had a good discussion and answered many very good questions regarding the sale of the church.  The motion that we voted on was “that First Christian Church sell its property at 950 28th street and empower the trustees to complete the negotiations.”  The vote was:  Yes-81 votes, No-5 votes and Abstain-2 votes.  We are moving forward with the sale and can now start to look to the future.

We will start this process at an FCCafé on May 21st. We are calling this “A Time to Dream.”  You should be thinking and praying about how you would like to move forward.  Please come prepared to share your ideas at this meeting.

We also authorized the Sanctuary Renewal Committee to begin preparing the sanctuary so that we can move back upstairs for worship.  That work is also moving forward.  We are estimating that it will be 18 months to two years before the sale is final so we will be spending lots more Sundays in the sanctuary.

Thanks to the 3+1 (the trustees plus Sandy Bish) for answering all of those questions, to the Board and the SRC for their support and to all of you for your continued prayers and for your great questions.

Rosemary Campbell

President of the Congregation

FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

FOR OUR COMMUNITY TABLE TEAM AND OTHER POSITIONS!!!

FCC is the host facility three times a week for Community Table.  Community Table is an incredible food program for persons living-on-the-edge in Boulder and serves a free, wholesome hot meal to the clients four evenings a week (one evening at Mountain View Methodist, three evenings at First Christian).  The high quality food is prepared at local restaurants and stores and is provided through Community Food Share to Community Table.

First Christian provides team members to set-up, serve, and clean-up only one time a month (the third Thursday), and we feel that it is very important to continue that service by our members.  Unfortunately, because of a change in Community Table serving time, a number of the long-time volunteers (to whom we extend a wholehearted thanks) are unable to help with this project now.  The set-up persons work from 3:45 till 5:00 or 5:30 p.m., dependent on the arrival times of the serving and clean-up crew that works from 5:00 or 5:30 until finished, usually about 6:30 p.m.

WE NEED YOU, AND YOU, AND YOU.  Please call Rosemary Campbell at 303.651.3989 to volunteer or to be a substitute.  Can you help for the summer months, or on a trial basis?  Call now.

Or, if you cannot help at Community Table, would you be interested in sending out the email each month and receiving responses of who is available to work that month on the third Thursday and then assigning times for the volunteers in a second email?  This person is called the recruiter.

Also, Echo McAfee will be leaving her position on the Community Table Board that meets every other month in the evening.  Is this a service you would be interested in providing?  Call Rosemary for more information.                                                                                           Marcie Geissinger

MEET RORY COWL

The Music Search Committee is happy to announce the hiring of a summer accompanist, Rory Cowl!  Rory will play service music for both the Golden West service and second service as well as schedule and rehearse our special music during June, July and August.

Rory was a President's and Honors Scholarship recipient at the University of Maryland, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2004.  He has had much performance and ensemble experience and has taught jazz and classical piano at the Boulder Arts Academy.  He also served as accompanist at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Hyattsville, MD and at Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. He will begin at FCC May 21st but will leave to begin graduate studies in California this fall.

Vincent Mirandi, who is moving to Florida, will complete his ministry with us Sunday, May 14th. Rachel Aurand, accompanist for Golden West, has accepted a position with a Catholic Church in Denver and will begin there June 4th.  We thank both Vincent and Rachel for sharing their gifts with us and wish them well in the next step of their journeys!

THANK YOUS

We wish to thank you all for your many thoughts and prayers, for our grandson while he was in Iraq.  He is home now!  With his wife and two children.  Happily so.  Thank you again.

                                                                                                Helen and Bill Real

Thanks to the Board members, trustees, Rosemary, and others who worked so hard behind the scenes since January to bring to the congregation a comprehensive proposal for the sale of the church property.  I appreciate all the time and energy put into the information-gathering and the patience in answering all the questions raised at the congregational meeting.  Well done.

Carol Poore

A big thank-you to everyone who called, visited, brought food, gave gifts, and contributed money and diapers at our recent shower.  Matthew is doing well and we are starting to get a little more sleep at night, so John and I are doing well also!  We appreciate everyone's generosity and well-wishes.

Deborah and John Rode

Dear First Christian Church Women,

Thank you so much for the cookies & dessert bars.  They were very yummy.  It was a very nice surprise to see at my door when I got home from school.  I am a research assistant at CU at this time, and I am not taking classes.  However, I never turn down chocolate chip cookies.

                                                                                   Thanks again, Kendra Colyar

                       Dear First Christian Church,

Thank you for the delicious cookies you guys sent.  It was so wonderful to hear from the church.  I hope everything is going great.  I heard about the offer for the church and whatever you guys decide I wish you the best of luck.

Aimee Shepherd

P.S. I miss you all very much!

$$$$$$   MONEY MATTERS   $$$$$$

We are running right on track for our expenses versus budget for the year.  However, we are running a little behind on income.  If you are behind on your pledges and can catch up on them before the summer, that would help out the operational financial picture.

We are running a deficit budget this year, so even if we are on track for expenses versus income, we will still spend $18,000 more than we take in.  This is consistent with several recent years of deficit budgets.  This is yet another reason that securing our financial future via property sale and lease income is so important!

Our new bookkeeper, Susie Burley, had to resign due to family health issues.  Please keep her and her husband, Ed, in your prayers.  In the meantime I will perform the bookkeeping functions.

Your Treasurer, Sandy Bish

LIFE AND NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Congratulations to Polly and Lee Warkentine who became grandparents, again, upon the birth of Miles Harding to son and daughter-in-law, Blaine and Stacy, on May 1st.

And the world welcomed Calia Ann Morris into the world on May 7th!  She is the daughter of Christine Manica and Zach Morris, granddaughter of Debbie and Dave Manica and niece of Michelle, great-granddaughter of Rachel and Roy Shepherd. Calia also has a plethora of aunts, uncles and cousins, all with ties to our congregation!  She weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. at birth.

All our “rah-rahs” and “woo-woos” are going to Iowa along with Megan Howe and the rest of her Odyssey of the Mind team.  International competition is Memorial Day weekend!

It was great to see Doris Martin in worship Sunday.  Doris has been away helping an ailing sister for several weeks.

Albert Allen is currently a patient at North Valley Hospital in Thornton where his medications are being adjusted following a fall.  He hopes to return to Manor Care.

After valve replacement surgery, Barbara Koshio is expected to be resting well at home as you read this!  A recuperation period of 8 weeks is usual in these situations.  Our prayers continue to be with her and Gordon.

Steve Kadlec continues to have problems with nausea following his recent surgery.  Our prayers are with him and with Heather.

He just can’t stay home!  Keith Lance will soon return from a fun-filled two weeks touring manor houses and castles in Great Britain!

Mardi Byers received 5 curtain calls at the performance of Tosca which mother Jane Byers attended in Lubeck, Germany.  Jane is glad to be back in Boulder with Zollie and reports that both daughter Mardi and son Jeff are doing very well in their music pursuits.

The spaghetti dinner is a fundraiser to benefit the Golden West Foundation wellness center fund.  The wellness center fund was utilized initially to purchase state of the art exercise equipment for the on-site wellness center at Golden West Senior Residence.  Contributions to the wellness center fund are now used to provide assistance to low-income elderly residents of Golden West who cannot afford the full price of a membership to the wellness center and to support the program in general.  The exercise program helps residents increase and maintain strength and mobility, which in turn vastly improves their ability to maintain their independence.
