UPDATE ON SALE OF CHURCH PROPERTY

We know you want to hear what is going on.  We wish we had something definitive to tell you. We are working on it continuously.

Since our February 6th letter to the congregation, there have been hundreds of email exchanges, the Executive Committee of the Board met three times plus the regular Board meeting, and representatives (Erik Mason, Marcie Geissinger, Eleanor Hubbard, Terry Zimmerman) named by the Executive Committee met with representatives of the Golden West (GW) Operating Board, and Marcie, Eleanor, and Hugh Crowder met with our attorney, Brendan Chatham.  We are in the process of scheduling a meeting to be held in the very near future with GW and Jim Chanin (the developer who we are in contract with for sale of our church property).  We will let you know when we know more.

Marcie Geissinger,

Chair, Board of Trustees

Cory Wendling will appear in Hidden, a World Premiere production at Backstage Theatre in Breckenridge March 30 thru April 22, 2007 (Fri, Sat, Sun).  Adult tickets are $15.

Seven lives intersect in this compelling new drama inspired by the true stories of rescuers and hidden children in Nazi-occupied Holland.  The voices of the oppressed, the oppressors, and the quiet heroes speak once more in this powerful new play celebrating hope and humanity – and the hidden courage inside us all.

“Oh, there are voices of the past. Links from a broken chain.  Wings that can bear us back to times which cannot come again.  Yet God forbid we should lose the echoes that remain.”

For more information contact Kay Lowe-Wendling.

ANOTHER BLESSING!

On Sunday, March 11th we welcomed Adeline Zetocha into our church family!  Adeline attends the Golden West services each week and comes to us by transfer of letter from Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder.  God is good!

NEED TICKETS?

The annual fund-raising dinner for UMHE (United Ministries in Higher Education) will be held in our Riley Hall on Saturday, April 14th.  Theme for the event is "Joy to the World" - a continuation of the message the group shared as worship leaders on March 11th.  A professional chef will create a international gourmet meal, concluding with a special French pastry!  There will also be a silent auction.

For tickets, please contact the church office at 303.442.1861.

LIFE & NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Shawn Crowder has earned a place on the Dean’s List at the Berklee College of Music, for excellent academic performance.  This was Shawn’s first semester at the Boston school.

Congratulations Shawn!

Following surgery on her knee, Pearl Grothe continues rehab at Boulder Community Hospital.  And her nose looks great!

Alie Wilkins-Crowder and Sady Swanson will attend the Dwight D. Eisenhower Foundation’s “People to People Ambassador Program” in Washington, D.C.  They were recommended by their teachers.  Alie and Sady each wrote an essay on why they wanted to

participate.  They follow in the footsteps of Zachary Poore who attended the same

conference last year!  Way to go Alie, and Sady!

Thanks to Jean Crowder, Kay Norris and Jeannine Henderson for “de-cluttering,” dusting, cleaning and organizing the music library / education storage area and the office work room!  The next challenge they took on is the little office that serves many

purposes for staff and volunteers.  Thanks, too, to Dennis Hubbard for seeing that the

“junque” was removed to new “homes.”

New organ.  New seating arrangement in the sanctuary.  Grunts and groans in the process, but the results are wonderful!  Thanks to Deb and Dave Manica, Rachel and David Shepherd, Becca Hirsch and Ikuko Scheuren for their hard work.

Welcomed additions to the Diaconate:  Barb and Gordon Koshio!  But their service will be interrupted soon as Gordon takes on a limited time job in Hawaii!

Our love and sympathy are extended to Sherrill Morris in the death of her aunt, Margaret Morris, in Wellington, Kansas.

Love and sympathy are also given to Connie Visser whose sister, Ann Keesen, died recently.

Everyone will again enjoy the wide leaf palms provided by Jean Crowder on Palm Sunday.

Thank you, Jean!

All areas of the church are getting spiffed up!  Thank you Jean Crowder and Mary Crowder for cleaning the dressing rooms in preparation for the baptisms on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.

Best wishes to Katie Thompson for her winter color guard state finals on March 31st at the Broomfield Event Center.  Good luck, Katie!

IN SYMPATHY

We sadly share news of the death of Claudia Reed Tripp on February 26th.  Claudia, who had been a member of First Christian Church of Boulder for seventy-five years, was 92.  She served our congregation in many capacities including our women’s work and most recently, as historian.  She was also one of the first women Elders in our church.

A celebration of her life will be held in the sanctuary at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28th.  A reception will follow in Riley Hall.  Our love and sympathy are with her family.

BEQUEST FROM MYRTLE BOGGS

Once again one of our beloved members has remembered our church in her will.  We have been notified that Myrtle Boggs left a nice bequest to First Christian from her estate.  Her family has requested that the money go into the Memorial Fund to be used at a later date for something in the new church.

To the ladies of the church…  Thank you for the lovely rose bowl for Valentine’s Day.  Juanita Mills

Disciple Women’s Fellowship:

Wayne and I enjoyed the lovely “Rose Bowl” and have appreciated the thoughts behind the

long-standing tradition and gift that the Women’s Fellowship provides each year at Valentine’s time.  The visit with Bob and Kay Lowe-Wendling was especially enjoyed and appreciated.  It had been a long time since Bob and Wayne had had opportunity to “jaw jack” (kid and make fun of each other!)  and of course for all of us to catch up on news of each other’s families, etc.  Lots of special memories there!  Thank you so much.

HELP THE YOUTH GROUP MAKE CASCARONES THIS EASTER!

Cascarones are a Mexican way to celebrate Spring and Easter.  You take an empty egg shell, decorate it, fill it with confetti and cover it with crepe paper, and then later, smash it on your friends' heads! (outside of course!)  But the Youth Group needs YOUR help to make them!

Please help us by saving egg shells.  When you crack your egg, please crack off the top third on the pointy end (instead of in the middle).  Pour the egg out for your breakfast or your baking.  Do NOT rinse the egg shell out: that tiny bit of egg white left in the egg shell will dry, making it stronger!  Please bring these shells, in their original egg carton (for protection’s sake!) to Sherrill by Sunday, March 18th. Or you can drop them off with Linda before then and she will put them in Sherrill's office.

Thanks for helping us with one of our fun activities.  We could never eat enough eggs without your help!

Youth Group and Sherrill

EASTER SUNDAY IS COMING!!!

One of the traditional events at our Easter Sunday Worship Celebration is an Easter Egg hunt for the smaller children.  The Youth Group helps with this by stuffing the candy which members of the church bring into plastic eggs to be "hidden".  Please bring egg sized candy or smaller to church by Palm Sunday.  You can give it to Sherrill or leave it in the office with Linda.  Then, we will stuff the eggs and get ready for Easter Sunday Morning!

Thanks,

Sherrill and the Youth Group

HISTORY REVISITED

Since our long-awaited new church organ has arrived, an article of interest from an old church newsletter offers a glimpse of long past, successful efforts by FCC to secure its predecessor:

November 23, 1960—Charles Byers, Chairman of the Organ Committee, challenged our congregation Sunday to become “key” persons by giving an “organ key” that opens the way to a new pipe organ for our new sanctuary.  One key can be provided for $50.00, a chord of three keys for $150 and a whole octave for $400.  About ten keys were given Sunday, getting our organ fund off to a fine start.

Mr. Byers explained that even though action had been taken to use money from the sale of our old building to purchase the new organ, keys must be given now.  It will take 6-8 months for the new pipes to be imported from Europe and construction completed.  Preliminary work needs to be done in the building before finish work is started.  So we need to have a new organ contract now.  In order to have work begun we need to have $5,000 in our organ fund by March 1.”

EASTER OFFERING – YOUR GIFTS CHANGE LIVES

In preparation for Easter, you may have practiced a deepened and more intentional prayer life.  Perhaps you practiced fasting or doing without certain foods or activities.  Some engage in Bible study with a new passion during Lent.  Such Lenten practices remind us that all we are we owe to God, our Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer.  Thank you for your faithfulness and its positive impact on our faith community and the people we are called to serve.

We practice "doing without" during Lent by choice–as a discipline.  Yet, young people like Rita suffer an unintentional fast.  She does without because violence has destroyed her home and her family's crops.  She lives on the street without shelter or adequate food and clothing.  Like so many around her, she is at risk of falling into the despair of substance abuse and losing track of her own soul.  Easter dawns like any other day for many in our world, devoid of redemption's hope.

"Christ is risen? Who's he?"

Well, thanks be to God, that is not the end of the story.  Our acts in anticipation of Easter help us prepare to participate in God's redemption.  All that "getting ready" prepares us personally and as a community of faith so the stone of our own hearts rolls away and Christ emerges.  We begin to understand in new ways how God calls us into mission to share hope with all the "Ritas" in our hurting world.

So, I encourage you to consider one more spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter: the discipline of giving.  For two Sundays (April 1 and April 8), our congregation will join with hundreds of thousands of Disciples in the United States and Canada in receiving the Easter Special Offering.  Thank you for the support you have provided for this offering in the past.  Your gifts have, indeed, changed lives all over the globe.  I hope you will prayerfully consider a generous gift this year.

Through the Easter Special Offering, we extend our mission in neighborhoods nearby and in more than 90 developing countries.  We meet spiritual and physical needs as mission partners.  We provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education and pastoral care in neighborhoods both in our country and all over the world through our Disciples mission partners.  We pool our resources with other Disciples and do so much more than one congregation might do alone.  Together, we repair some of the world's brokenness and embody the hope of redemption in the lives of those we are called to serve in Jesus name.

Through your faithful and generous gifts each year, people all over the world hear "Christ is risen," and can respond, "Christ is risen, indeed!"

Thank you for your generosity.  Your personal gift to the Easter Special Offering and our congregation’s support of Disciples Mission Fund provide life-changing ministry "from our doorsteps to the ends of the Earth.”   Thank you!

ABOUT OUR NEW MEMBERS

When new members, John and Teri Stickle first visited FCC-Boulder, they were distracted several times because each was trying to remember why Pastor Terry seemed so familiar to them.  The mystery was solved when, in talking with Terry, they all realized that Terry had conducted weddings and a funeral for the Stickle family in Missouri!

In 1978 when John and Teri first met, they were working for Ryerson Steel in North Kansas City MO.  John’s employment with RS took the family to several states and several locations, but in 1998 John asked to be transferred back to Denver.  Their stay here in 1986 had convinced them that this was the place they wanted to live and rear their family.  Lindsay, age 22, will graduate from CU in May with a degree in history.  She is looking forward to teaching history at the high school level.  Jack, age 24, is in a unique program for apprentices which will lead to full time employment with Total Plumbing, a commercial firm.

Teri has 2 part time jobs.  She works for Adams 12 School District in a school cafeteria.  The 2nd job takes her here, there, and everywhere as she drives a van transporting mentally and physically disabled clients for North Metro Community Services.

John retired March 1st from Ryerson Steel where he was Sales Manager.  He had completed 30 years with the company; he never worked for any other employer!

Both Teri and John expressed their personal value of recognizing everyone as equal in the eyes of God and of God’s family.  FCC’s commitment to Open and Affirming is very important to them.

Our prayers and love are with all of the Stickle family during this time of John’s courageous battle with cancer.  We are proud to call them Our Family.

Louise Johnson

Connie Visser was born in Hull, Iowa.  When she was 3 years old her father was diagnosed with tuberculosis and the family moved to Denver for health reasons.  She was the youngest of nine.  Her dad died when she was 3 years old and the family moved back to Iowa.

She was a psychiatric nurse in her young adult years.  She was married and had three daughters, Carol, Pat, and Sue.

Her previous church affiliation was with the Christian Reformed Church.  That church originated in the Netherlands and was also referred to as the Dutch Reform Church.  All of Connie’s ancestors were from the Netherlands.

Connie’s hobbies and interests are reading and crossword puzzles.  Her volunteer activities have been in church in care ministry and disaster relief.

Her first Sunday at FCC was actually at Golden West.  She said she finds the services to “reach out” to her and she really appreciates Terry!

WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER

Robert Bard (uncle of Sherrill Morris), Verna Clouse, Pearl Grothe, Aidan Immroth*, Dorys Lester, Jean Olson, John Stickle, Maya Tobias (friend of Margaret Cline), Rilla Wiggins (aunt of Dennis Hubbard), life and death of Margaret Morris (aunt of Sherrill Morris).

*Aidan Immroth is the young grandson of a friend of Keith Lance.  His grandmother sent the following e-mail.

Thank you so much for sending the bulletin from your church.  I am sure that Aidan will be delighted to be remembered with prayer by the people in your church.  Please thank all of them!  He had a wonderful time in Colorado when I took him to Ft. Collins to visit my mother.  He still talks about it - he caught his first fish - a trout and had an overnight in the mountains where we saw hummingbirds up close and some large animal tracks.  He's asked me to take him back sometime!

Update - he's had two chemo sessions after getting the port put in a week ago Monday.  So far so good.  He'll be continuing at his regular school (as much as he can when not in treatment or being too sick to go).  He just got a flute and is beginning flute lessons soon.  He's also knitting squares to make a blanket - so he has several projects to work on and keep him busy.

Barbara Immroth (Aidan’s grandmother)

NOTES FROM JOLLY OLDE ENGLAND

Excerpts From A Letter

Hi friends-

So far for fun and interest we've taken some neat outings, ranging from the magnificent cathedral in Ely; to an archeological site from around the 600's, where an Anglo Saxon king was buried in a full sized boat; to the ocean; twice to London to wander around and yesterday to see a provocative and well done play about rock music's place in the Czech velvet revolution, commenting on the foibles of both communism and capitalism. Also several walks in the lush green landscape, which I LOVE.

The rest of the time, we've been looking for permanent housing, finding the used furniture stores and looking for stuff for the house, figuring out bus schedules, how to get a card from the National Health Service, etc, etc.  Paula's working, of course, and liking it.  We're thrilled that we've found a house to rent which we think will be just what we want. We can't move in till mid-February, though, and it looks like the stuff we shipped won't get here till early to mid March, so it will be a while before we're really settled.  Anyway, that's what I've been doing, and I've felt quite busy enough, though it's great not to feel under pressure.

Well, dear friends, I'm going to stop.  Hope this hasn't been too long. I'll write more in a couple weeks or so, and I'll try to write personally to you when I can. Though I'm having quite a good time here, I miss you, and it lifts my spirit to hear from you, so drop a line once in a while.

Peace and love,

Priscilla Inkpen
