ANNUAL ALL-CHURCH RETREAT

INTRODUCES NEW SERIES!

Saturday, August 5

"Living the Questions"

  • A 12 session DVD-based small group program of Christian invitation, initiation and spiritual

formation

·        An unapologetically liberal alternative to other such programs

Our Annual All-Church Retreat will provide introduction to a stimulating new series for those who eagerly search for a systemized way to reflect on their faith.

Welcome to this wonderful opportunity for seekers to explore the journey of Christian faith, a thinking approach to theology, deeper relationship with God, and the importance of compassion, justice and peace in our lives.

Through the structure of this series, and through the welcoming spirit at our church, we will create a safe environment, where all kinds of questions are allowed, where no prefabricated answers will be given, and where deep questions will be honored more than flat answers.  We will talk about Biblical authority, prayer, the heart of Christianity, and about being a believer in the 21st century.

The producers of this study are not theological scholars, but local church pastors responding to a need in their congregations.  Each 2.5 hour session will start with a simple mean and a short check-in with each other.  20-30 minute videos start us off on the special focus for the session.  Contributors include Nancy Ammerman, Marcus Borg, Minerva Carcano, John Dominic Crossan, Siyoung Park, Tex Sample, and John Shelby Spong.  Printed material will be distributed to the participants.  We will close with silence and prayer.

Watch future issues of "The Ram's Horn" for more information about "Living the Questions" and about the children's program too!

IN SYMPATHY

Our love, prayers and sympathy go to Paul Haynes, son of Charlotte Haynes, and his family upon Charlotte's sudden death, June 3rd.  Charlotte has been a faithful member of our congregation since 1961, serving as President of Disciples Women (then called Christian Women's Fellowship) and as a staunch member of both the vocal and bell choirs of our church.  She will be long remembered for her quiet manner, her strong faith and her big floppy sun hat!

A memorial service celebrating Charlotte's life was held on Friday, June 9th at 3:00 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church because we are in the midst of refurbishing our sanctuary.  Rev. Terry Zimmerman officiated.

LIFE AND NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Ever the traveler, Keith Lance has most recently made trips to upstate New York and the Adirondack Mountains for the first time, and to the Washington D.C. area, an annual favorite! Business, (he claims).

Good to have Rory Cowal back in the accompanist seat.  And we thank David Morgan for filling in for Rory in his absence.

Jane Byers enhanced our worship service two weeks ago with a beautiful solo.  She also arranged for one of her students to sing for us last Sunday.  Thank you Jane!  Those of you out there – and we know you ARE there – who have musical talents to share in our “Special Music” spot over the summer, please step forward!  Contact Rory, Jane, or the church office!

Umm, umm, good!  Thanks to both the Worship and Church Fellowship / Growth Committees for yet another fun and tasty fellowship event in the form of a salad potluck!  And thanks to all who brought delicious salads.  The hymn sing was wonderful too!

Eleanor and Dennis Hubbard are traveling to Lima, Peru and then Cuzco before trekking to Machu Picchu.  After acclimating to high altitude in Cuzco by visiting several Inca archeological sites, the trek starts at 9000 ft, climbing to 13,600 and 12,800 before ending at 8,000 ft in Machu Picchu 4 days later.  (Ask them about the porters who make the trek easier,

though).  Machu Picchu was a resort for Inca royals, built in the early 1500s before the

Spanish conquest, and one of the archeological wonders of the world.

Norris trips: May 12-22, Honolulu, HI to visit daughter Linda Quintana and her husband, Benito.  Linda now works for East-West Center and Benito is a Spanish professor at the University of Hawaii.  Kay has found a new love...snorkeling!   May 25-June 2, Rochester,

Indiana at the cabin of friends for fishing and fellowship.  June 2-5, Fraser, CO where Dave's

barbershop chorus practiced and Kay and Dave retreated to a wonderful bed and breakfast.

Additional summer plans include a short camping trip in June, back to Indiana for the

barbershop competitions, July 4-9, and back to Wisconsin a few days later for two weeks

                 camping and a wedding.

Do you have summer travel or other fun / interesting plans for the summer?  If you do, be sure to let the church office know.  You might soon see your name in an upcoming issue of The Ram’s Horn!

WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER

THANK YOUS!

A special THANK YOU to everyone who sent my mother cards.  When I was home for Mother’s Day, she pulled them all out and showed me every single one of them.  She keeps them in a large envelope by her chair and looks at them when she gets down.  It was incredible to see your signatures and the lovely things you wrote.  Thank you very much for helping see her through this hard time.

                                                                                                Sherrill Morris

I want to send a special thank you to the many people who have contributed to Chuck’s Memorial Fund at the church.  At our new building a special reminder of his 23 years as choir director will be honored.

Those of you who gave to Chuck’s Choral Music Education Scholarship at C.U.’s College of Music, where every year since 1985 a student receives help to educate themselves and others and keep Chuck’s love of music flowing out into the world.  It’s a continuing blessing!

                                                                                                Love, Jane Byers

WISHING HER WELL!

Our Goodbye to Echo

This Sunday, June 11th, following our second service, our church family will say "goodbye" to Echo McAfee who is moving to Missouri to be near her son and family.  Plan to share a memory or two (notes and / or photos would be nice) over a piece of cake and a cup of coffee or tea!

Echo and her late husband, Sam, joined our congregation in September of 1997 and immediately got involved and found a place in the hearts of our members.  Echo has been part of our vocal and bell choirs, New Women and has served as "music lady" for our church school as well.  She is currently secretary to the church Board.

PLAN NOW FOR THE ANNUAL ALL CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE

Please mark the sale and set-up dates on your calendars now and plan to be part of this major outreach endeavor involving the entire congregation.

Dates of sale:  Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26

Set up days:  Wednesday and Thursday, August 23 and 24

Let this event serve as an inspiration to you and your neighbors and friends to weed out your closets, garages, and basements.   Set those wonderful, clean, desirable, but no longer needed items aside for the Rummage Sale.   Do not bring your things at this time.  Wait for the announcement that it is OK to begin bringing things to the church.   All money earned from this sale goes to the Disciple Mission Fund through our women’s group, Disciple Women.   Leftover product stays in the Boulder County community and benefits many people.  Think of our Rummage Sale as the gift that keeps on giving.

These sales are always fun and valuable.  Please plan to participate in every way that you can:  donating, buying, and helping.

Volunteer by calling Kay Norris 303.442.5081 or the church office.
