TAIZÉ

Take a break from the summer “everybody’s got ’em” blahs — the oppressive heat of the season, the predictable form of our traditional worship structure, the sound of hymns so familiar we pay little attention to the words.

Experience this week’s Taizé service as a fresh breath of the spirit; cooling, calming, and yet an exhilarating expression of praise.

Keith Lance and Becky Trejo will be cantors, leading the congregation in musical chants of reverence and thanksgiving.  It will be an opportunity to take part in an age old worship tradition made new again.

LIFE & NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Naomi and Thomas Mason recently stayed and provided entertainment for grandmother Martha Mason this summer.  Uncle Erik and grandpa also got in on the fun.

Jamie and Cory Zimmerman, along with Jamie’s parents from St. Louis, visited with Cindy and Terry.

Joyce Jonker, who joined FCC on April 1, 2007, has moved from Golden West to Longmont.  Her family lives there and can more easily assist her as needed.  Sorry to see

you go, Joyce.

It was nice to see Martha Mason’s sister Mary Wood in church last week.

The FCC Youth Group swim party and dinner was a swimmingly big success according to Milton!  Carol Ashmore prepared spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, salad and strawberry shortcake for dessert!  Youth attending the party were Alie Wilkins-Crowder, Sady

Swanson, Corey and Cameron Skanes.  Jeff & Kristy Austin supervised at the pool.

Special thanks to Becca Hirsch, guest soloists and individual members of the choir for their special music during the summer.  Don’t know what we’d do without you!

NANCY ROOT LEADS STAFF OF THE MIRROR

Editor Nancy Root manages a small staff of reporters and freelancers who put out The Mirror, a monthly publication in Boulder, Colorado.  While Root’s newspaper doesn’t boast the circulation of Boulder’s Daily Camera, its content is targeted to a specific group in the community.  And it isn’t staffed by typical members of the press, either; The Mirror is entirely written, edited, and produced by residents of Frasier Meadows Retirement Community.

Root moved to Frasier in February 2002, and as soon as she was “settled” she began surveying the groups and activities available on campus.  She was attracted to The Mirror and began working as a reporter for the publication.  “I have a degree in journalism, have used writing in many ways during my life, and am thrilled that in my retirement years I still have a way to use it,” she notes.  Root has worked as either an administrator or an editor, or both, after raising three children.  She has been a director of volunteer programs, administrative director, sales operations manager, and consultant/trainer.  “In each position, I either created an in-house newsletter or took over an existing one,” she says.  “That’s because I value information highly and always feel the need to share it.”

Root had been at Frasier for about a year, reporting for The Mirror, when the editor became ill.  “The publisher, Ed Putzier, said to the administration, ‘Let’s make Nancy the editor.  She has good ideas,’” Root recalls.  “I accepted only because I saw that Ed had a long history with The Mirror, and he would help me.  We have made a very good team.”  Putzier, who has been a resident at Frasier for 13 years and has a background in physics, mathematics, and radiation biology, is in his ninth year as publisher of the 12- to 14-page newsletter.  He does the publication’s layout using computer technology, and he also contributes written content.  “He writes beautifully,” Root says.  “He is phenomenal.  I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to work with.”
