NEWS FLASH!  DETAILS ANNOUNCED FOR

ALL-CHURCH RETREAT!

Boulder, CO -- Our sources have learned that the First Christian Church All-Church Retreat will be held on Saturday, August 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Community United Church of Christ, 2650 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder.  Reliable insiders tell us that the price, including lunch, will be $20 for adults and $10 for children.

These All Church Retreats, noted for their in-depth exploration of issues of worship, spirituality, and theology, have moved from their long-time home at Sunshine Mountain Inn at Allenspark due to a scheduling conflict.  This year’s Retreat marks the beginning of a new adult educational series taught by Rev. Terry Zimmerman, called “Living the Questions.”  The series is described as an “unapologetically liberal alternative” to other such programs.

A children’s program, taught by Sarah Johnson, will allow all ages to participate in the Retreat. The retreat is open to all – however, registration should be in by August 1 to allow church leaders to order enough food for lunch.  To register, see Erik Mason at church or contact the church office, 303 442.1861.  Film at 11:00…

United Ministries in Higher Education is happy to announce that we have hired Rev. Todd Smiedendorf as our new Campus Minister.  We are very impressed by the relevance and the depth of his experience.  He is a United Church of Christ minister, ordained in 2001 (M. Div., Iliff School of Theology, 1993).  He has experience not only with campus ministry but with ministering to people in a variety of life transitions.  He most recently worked with Pacific University students as part of his responsibilities as Associate Minister of the UCC in Forest Grove, Oregon. As Todd himself put it, "theologically he lives right in the heart of the rainbow that UMHE is painting.”  We look forward to your meeting Todd and we thank you for your support of this important campus ministry.

In addition this year, we are asked to provide volunteers to help bag food items for distribution.  Our next day to bag is Wednesday, July 19, for 1½ hours between 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.  We need three or four people.  The BCAP food cupboard is located at 2118 Fourteenth Street, next door to Lucile’s restaurant.  If you are interested, please contact the church office at 303.442.1861.

IN SYMPATHY

Our love and prayers are extended to Carol and Milton Ashmore and family, at the death on June 25th of Carol’s father, Albert Allen, 91.  Mr. Allen became an Associate Member of our congregation upon moving from the Dallas, Texas area.  He was a resident of Golden West before moving to a nursing care facility.  Services for Mr. Allen were held in Texas.

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY

Would you like to serve on the board of an important, in-house ministry?  Meetings are held once every other month.  If this sounds like a role for you, please contact the church office and say, “Yes!  Sign me up to be a member of the Community Table Board!”

REGULAR MEETING OF PRC

The Pastoral Relations Committee, PRC, met last week to talk about how we will function as an established committee of our Church.  Our Church constitution states that we will have a PRC in order to support the effective communication between the pastor and the church.  We plan to have scheduled meetings three to four times a year with this goal in mind.  The dates of these meetings will be shared with the congregation so that members can communicate with committee members as to recommended agenda items.  There are many ways to communicate with Terry, and committee members want to offer their services as one more way.  We believe that open and frequent communication is essential to successful relationships and communities, therefore we encourage you to express your ideas, thoughts and questions directly to Terry and / or to a member of the PRC.  As we receive communication from you, we will add it to our topics for conversation during our meetings.  The committee members are:

Erik Mason, board representative

Debbie Haseman, elder representative

Dave Manica, pastor's representative

Please contact any of these members to share your thoughts as needed.

FROM OUR VISITORS

Rev. Zimmerman,

How nice to receive your letter.  You beat me to the punch!  I had full intentions to shoot you out an e-mail saying how much we enjoyed your sermon and apologizing for having to scoot out before the best part: food and fellowship!  I wanted to let you know my family is part of a 3000 member congregation in Joppa, MD; the website is http://www.mountainchristian.org/ , and is full of interesting info on our church.  You seem to be a church that could be experiencing great growth soon, with the remodeling and all.  Also what a beautiful area to worship in!!  I pray that your church would continue to fulfill the great commission and continue to make visitors feel as welcome as my daughter and I were.

In his name, Rob and Kendra Arsenault
