LIFE & NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Marj Collins has had lots of visitors the past couple of weeks!  Her most recent visitors were Louise Johnson, Kendra Colyar and Martha Mason.  During their visit they enjoyed a walk through the sculpture park.  Martha reports Marj is looking good!

David and Kay Norris have enjoyed having both daughters, Linda and Sara, home.  They came to attend their father’s competition at the International Men’s Barbershop Harmony in Denver’s Pepsi Center.  David reported that “on Friday my chorus (Sound of the Rockies from

the Denver Mile High Chapter) became 3rd Place Medallist International Men's Barbershop

Harmony Champions.  What a great high this is.  It was an intense competition, and I was

joined on stage by 118 other guys including a couple other locals some of you know: Steven

DeLyser and Gregg Triggs.  My chorus will sing at Chautauqua auditorium on Saturday, July

                28th at 7 p.m.  Some of our chapter's competing quartets (who finished 3rd, 12th, 19th, and

26th in the world), as well as other area barbershop choruses and quartets, also will

                participate.”

Dave Manica recently celebrated his 50th birthday!  Are you feeling old, Dave?

On their visit in the UK the Abel family spent last week down in the New Forest with Mel’s parents - one of the wettest weeks on record.  Mel’s sister got married at the beginning of that week.  “It rained ALL DAY, the bride wore her Wellington boots to the church, and the reception was in a field under canvas in the rain....... but she was radiant, loved every minute

and so did the groom, which made it OK for the rest of us that water was dripping down our

necks whilst we ate and all the photos were taken under umbrellas.”  Daniel and Thomas had

a blast, built sandcastles on the beach, rode the ferry to Brownsea Island, explored old priories

and ate ice cream.  Mel also got to spend a lot of time with her grandmother.

The Lafayette Library Board served chocolate cake and non-alcoholic champagne at the celebration honoring Carol Poore and another person who was ending his service on the board.  Carol has served eight years on the library board.  Way to go, Carol!

Bob and Kay Lowe-Wendling spent a few days in Steamboat Springs celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary—someone else’s, of course!

Becca Hirsch and Ray went on a relaxing, short 2-day camping trip with their dog Parker.  They enjoyed the cool weather and fishing.

The FCC tradition for the last several years has been to help BCAP in the month of July.  Could you volunteer 2 hours on Wednesday, July 18th to help bag groceries to be delivered?

Each Sunday during the month, we will be receiving cash/check donations as part of our morning offerings.  Please make checks payable to First Christian Church, with BCAP Cupboard in the memo line or place cash in an envelope similarly marked.  At the end of the month, we will present BCAP with a single check from our church with which they will stock their food bank.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

The Historical Jesus and the Future of the Church

Robert J. Miller & Joanna Dewey

LECTURE

The Rise and Fall of Traditional Christianity                                                Friday, 7:30-9:00 P.M.

Professors Dewey and Miller will explain how Christianity grew from a small dissident band led by a peasant-prophet-teacher named Jesus into a religion that served both the political needs of the Roman Empire and its successors and the religious needs of Christian people throughout many centuries. The speakers also discuss how, in the modern era, advances in the sciences, experiences of religious pluralism, and the historical criticism of the Bible have undermined the intellectual and religious adequacy of traditional Christianity.

WORKSHOPS

The Historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God                                             Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-Noon

Early Christians turned Jesus into a divine Messiah who demanded worship. The message of the historical Jesus, however, was about the Kingdom of God, not about himself. Using gospel material, especially parables, identified by the Jesus Seminar as authentic, this presentation uncovers Jesus’ radical vision of human life under God’s rule.

The Death of Jesus—Then and Now                                                               Saturday, 1:30-2:30 P.M.

Followers of Jesus had to make sense of his death if they were to continue to embrace his message of the Kingdom of God. The New Testament presents various options, building on Jesus as victim, as martyr, and as sacrifice. Sacrifice gradually became the dominant understanding. The discussion will explore sacrifice, what uses it served and serves, and why it no longer satisfies many today.

Why Listen to Jesus?                                                                                          Saturday, 3:00-4:00 P.M.

Christianity has ignored the historical Jesus for nineteen centuries. Why should we pay attention to him today?  Does he have any relevance for modern faith and culture? Dewey and Miller will lead a discussion on the relationship between historical evidence and religious faith, commenting specifically on the significance of Jesus' message and life for our times.

RELATING THE TEXT

What is the test of a good sermon?  From a specifically Christian point of view, the test of my sermons is not how well organized they are, or how entertaining, or even how strictly biblical, but rather the response to the sermon.  The congregation, in its discipleship, is the final, most important test of a sermon.
