MEMBERSHIP CLASS BEGINS – FEBRUARY 25th

Young people who are in sixth grade or higher are eligible to participate in our Pastors' Class on Church Membership.  This year, we have several who meet this requirement.  If you are one of the lucky ones, these sessions will give you the opportunity to learn more about God, Christ, our denomination - the Disciples of Christ - and our own church!

At the end of the series, you will have the choice to make your confession of faith and be baptized or wait until another time.

The classes will meet on Sundays beginning February 25th and ending on Palm Sunday,

April 1st.  We will gather during the Church School time, 9:30 - 10:30, in the lower level of the Education Building.  Sherrill Morris and Rev. Zimmerman will lead the group.

SECOND DISCERNMENT MEETING

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25th

Mark your calendars now for the second discernment meeting following the sanctuary worship service on February 25th.  We’ll have an all-church potluck meal and discussion.  You are encouraged to attend to make your views known.

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?

At the first Discernment meeting on January 28th a survey was given to all who were present.  If you were unable to attend that meeting, one will be mailed to you.  Please complete and return the survey in a sealed envelope by the printed deadline, February 4th, to Eleanor Hubbard or to the church office.

Also, some members of the congregation have asked if they can attend the second meeting on February 25th even if they were unable to attend the first meeting.  The answer is an unqualified YES!

LIFE AND NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

On Monday January 15th, Ray Brown (Becca Hirsch’s partner) rode in the Bill Pickett African American Rodeo at the National Western Stock Show.  As part of a historical segment, he portrayed U.S. Army Officer Henry O. Flipper, who was a Buffalo Soldier and the first African American graduate of West Point.  Ray and his horse, The Duchess, were

in full period-uniform... he was mighty handsome!

Congratulations to Pam Ware whose new hospice has passed all inspections, assessments and paperwork!  Erie now has a wonderful new service for those with such needs.

Eleanor and Dennis Hubbard are going to be grandparents!  Daughter, Kirsten, and

son-in-law, Brian Lewis, are expecting a son the early part of June.  This big news was shared this week.  How exciting!

There is no better place to meet up with your grown daughters than Laguna Beach, California.  So says Louise Johnson who will be doing just that.  That follows a visit to Kansas for the wedding of a grandson.  Safe journeys, Louise.

Another victim of the snow and ice: Barbara Wilkins-Crowder has a significantly sprained ankle as a result of a misstep.

Paradise Now – Hany Abu-Assad’s disturbing

yet moving tale finds two men at a critical

juncture in their lives.  They’ve been drafted as suicide bombers in an upcoming assignment in

Tel Aviv.  Granted a night to spend with their families, they go home but are unable to say goodbye for fear of tipping their hand.  But

perhaps it isn’t time for farewells yet as the two become separated during their mission and must decide on their own whether to continue or bail

out.  A very timely movie bringing human faces

to our dialogue about terrorism.

Call Priscilla Gifford (303.939.0895) if you’d like to attend.

ROSE BOWLS AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED

More rose bowls are needed!  If you have a donation, place it on the kitchen counter before February 10th.

The Disciple’s Women are beginning to think “Rose Bowls” again!  Delivering bowls of carnations, Valentines and a cheerful visit has been a long-standing gift to our churches’ home-bound folks, a gift that gives back much joy.

We need a lot of help in order to prepare and deliver approximately 35 bowls on Saturday, February 10th.  If you can help, please call Jan Einert at 303.442.2384.  Each person should have no more that 3 to 4 visits to make and should be done by 11:30 a.m.

Preparation time:  9:30 a.m. in Riley Hall

Delivery time:  10:30 a.m. (names and bowls in Riley Hall)

Please help us to share a little Valentine’s joy and love!

LETTER FROM SANDRA HERGENREDER

December 2006/January 2007

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Well.  It's Christmas Day.  At last. I'm at home.  Alone.  I can't be with family today.  Although I'd like to be.  I've opened my two presents.  Listened to some Christmas music. Read the birth narratives from Matthew and Luke.  Such a long day.  While I am alone today, I'm not lonely.  The just completed Advent season of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love has sustained me throughout the season – and will, with intentionality on my part, sustain me throughout my life.

That's not the case with our kids at CCH.  Many of our boys and girls will not be with their families today. Some have had parental rights severed.  Many have come from dangerous situations and it's just not safe for them to be with their families yet - and for some, it will never be safe to go back to their families.  Today the kids, too, have opened their presents.  Volunteers are opening their hearts and homes to the kids and will provide a home-cooked holiday meal.  But do these too-old-children know the story of the infant, Jesus?  Some do.  Many do not.  They may have a religious background, but perhaps not as much spiritual nourishment as they need.  Do our kids have Hope?  Or Peace?  Or Joy? Or Love?  When they first come to the Home, if they have any idea what Hope, Peace, Joy and Love mean, it's probably not in the context of Advent.........

Well.  It's nearly the middle of January (you know how stuff happens when you are in the middle of something - like a letter....) and it's been about three years since Rev. John Cook retired as the Chaplain at CCH.  We haven't had anyone whose primary task was to intentionally interact with the children in a spiritual way.  Thanks to the generosity of so many individuals and groups within the religious community, we now have enough designated funding to hire a full-time Chaplain for the kids. Rev. Niki Jorgenson began those duties on January 8.  Niki is a DOC'er who attended Phillips University and has a Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School.  A BIG plus: CCH and Niki are not strangers!  She not only has friends in the Central Rocky Mountain Region, she is familiar with The Home having participated in mission trips here as a youth and later as a youth minister.  As Chaplain, she will be providing interfaith and ecumenical pastoral care in a variety of ways to the children, families and staff at CCH.  Her experience in child and family day treatment therapy as well as missionary and pastoral work will give her the needed skills to help our kids and their families heal.  She will also maintain close relationships with faith communities and individuals who provide ongoing support to the Chaplaincy Program.  We are busy planning an open house reception for Niki and her family to meet all of you on Sunday, February 25, 2007, from 2:00 until 4:00 in the afternoon at CCH.  We will have a brief program at about 3:00.  We hope that the time frame of the reception will allow at least some of you from outside the Denver metro area to come.  Look to your nearest e-mail or snail mail box for an invitation.  It's hard to believe that, even with other funding restrictions, the Chaplaincy program has received such phenomenal financial support from our Churches, but, I don't know why it's so hard to believe.  After all, Christmas is the Season for Miracles.

Peace

Sandra Hergenreder

FRONT RANGE HOSPICE AWARDED ACCREDITATION

Erie, Jan 22, 2007 – By demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission‘s national standards for health care quality and safety, Front Range Hospice has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™.

“We sought accreditation for our organization because we want to demonstrate our commitment to patients’ safety and quality care,” says Pam Ware, Administrator of Front Range Hospice.  “We view obtaining Joint Commission accreditation as another step toward achieving excellence.”

“In becoming accredited, Front Range Hospice was evaluated against a set of national standards by The Joint Commission’s surveyor experienced in the delivery of home care services,” says Maryanne Popovich, R.N., executive director, Home Care Accreditation Program,  The Joint Commission. “Achieving accreditation demonstrates Front Range Hospice’s commitment to providing high quality and safe care to its clients.”

The Joint Commission conducted an unannounced, on-site evaluation of Front Range Hospice on January 18 and 19, 2007.  The accreditation award recognizes Front Range Hospice’s dedication to complying with the Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards on a continuous basis.  During this survey, the Joint Commission also assessed Front Range Hospice’s compliance with the State and Federal regulations for hospices and gave Front Range Hospice a perfect score.  “I am immensely proud of the efforts by the entire staff of Front Range Hospice.  The community can be assured that quality and safe patient care will continue to a focus of Front Range Hospice.”

Front Range Hospice opened its office in downtown Erie in June of 2006, and received its license as a home based hospice for the State of Colorado in August of 2006.  It specializes in providing quality and safe hospice care in the patient’s home, which includes private residences, assisted livings, nursing homes, or board and care homes.  Pam Ware, (member of our congregation) the founder and administrator, was the CEO of a Denver hospice where she earned her Hospice Administrator’s Certification prior to moving to this area and starting Front Range Hospice.  She is also a licensed clinical social worker with over 25 years of health care experience.  For immediate response to your hospice questions, or to schedule a home visit, call Front Range Hospice any time of day at 303-957-3101 or you can contact us through our website at www.frontrangehospice.com.
