ASH SUNDAY (FEBRUARY 10)
Ash Wednesday is exactly 40 days
before Easter, and we have usually observed this holy day by the marking of
ashes on each participant’s forehead at the mid-week service. This year at FCC, we will observe Ash Sunday
(the Sunday following Ash Wednesday), and this service, as it is traditionally,
will be one of reflection and meditation.
Ashes will be available for marking your forehead if you would like to
participate in this ritual. In addition,
the Worship Committee suggests that you bring a meaningful symbol (for
instance, a personal cross, a photo, a special candle, a song or poem) to
worship on this Sunday as a reminder to reflect on sacrifice and commitment
throughout Lent.
When:
Begins 40 days before Easter, begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter.
Lent was first observed in the fourth century as the 40-day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Its focus was on self-examination and self-denial, and Christians used fasting (abstaining from eating food) in the early years as a visible demonstration of this process.
Some Protestant denominations observe Lent (such as Anglican and Episcopalian), but many Protestant churches attach less significance to the season of Lent than to the individual holy days leading up to Easter.
Color: Violet Mood: Introspection
At various times in FCC’s worship life, we have used the liturgical seasons to a greater or lesser degree. This year, the Worship department will be paying close attention to the seasons and the moods that traditionally are emphasized during each season. The liturgical seasons will provide a foundation for the journey we have embarked upon to find and create new worship space and the many transitions that have already and will continue to happen along the way.
WORSHIP IN A TIME OF
TRANSITION
At the recent workshop with our “Transition” consultant, those in attendance got to experience a model of worship in “transition”.
The new Worship Committee for 2008 has now set 4 specific goals for themselves:
We hope to accomplish these goals with several strategies:
We want to hear from each of you about what helps you worship, what gets in the way of your worship and what you think most welcomes others into worship.
We will have a suggestion box available in the narthex throughout this year. Please give us your comments directly in person or via the box. We do ask that your written comments be signed so that we can follow up with you.
We thank God for each of you and are honored to be working

Plan to come and share a little Valentine’s Day love with some of our very special people! If you have rose bowls to donate, place them on the counter in Riley Hall or take them to Laura Burright in Golden West.
