WEEK OF COMPASSION OFFERING – FEBRUARY 17-24

Again this year, we will be given the opportunity to join with thousands of Disciples giving in response to worldwide disasters.  The need is staggering.  Already in 2008, WOC is responding to severe winter weather in China and El Salvador, flood relief in Mexico, India, Sumatra and Java, assistance to uprooted refugees in Uganda, Afghanistan, and Iraq, a cyclone in Bangladesh, and humanitarian needs from violence in Kenya and Darfur.

Closer to home, Week of Compassion is responding to flood relief and recovery in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Texas; severe winter weather in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Michigan; wildfires in California and Texas; hurricane recovery and rebuilding in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas; tornado recovery in Kansas and Florida, and other natural disasters in the United States.

All this, and it’s only February!  Oxfam, the respected United Kingdom charity, reports that the number of weather-related disasters in the world had quadrupled between 1984 and 2005.  There is nothing to suggest that the tide has been reversed since then.

Giving to Week of Compassion is important.  Sharing resources in response to the world’s many and staggering needs is part of our faith.  People in great need are not forgotten.  Lives are changed – no less than our own.  (Please use the special envelopes provided on February 17 and 24, and write “Week of Compassion” on your check’s notation line.)

We thank you, and the world’s stricken people thank you.

Your Christian Outreach Committee

Thanks to all of you for all of your care during my recovery.  Thanks for spending time with me and doing chores around the house; thanks for the food, the flowers, the calls and the cards but most of all thank you for your love and prayers.  I am doing much better now and can see progress almost every day.  Thanks again.

Rosie Campbell

I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, calls and cards upon the death of my mother-in-law, Donna Abel.  The family appreciated your cards and support very much.

Linda & Mike Abel

Also, many thanks to the Disciple Women for the beautiful rose bowls and lovely valentine cards!

                                                                                                Linda Abel and Terry Zimmerman

Thank you for all your prayers and support.  Although I'm far from finished with my cancer journey, I may finally have reached a plateau where I can "catch my breath" for a few weeks.  And I'm hoping that soon...soon, I'll be able to drive again.  In the meantime, Roger and I both appreciate your help.

Joann Dennett

The Youth of First Christian wish to thank everyone for a very successful Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday.  Community Table is the happy recipient of the $187 donated.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICE – MARCH 7, 2008

World Day of Prayer (WDP) is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year.  For 2008, the WDP women of Guyana (British Guiana), South America developed the theme, “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding.”  Through slides, the Guyana Committee welcomes us to share the marvels of God as seen in the natural beauty of their lush forests, savannas and beautiful birds in this diverse Land of Six Peoples and Many Rivers and to worship God as one people with a new wisdom and understanding.

The WDP service will be held at the Frasier Meadows Manor Chapel, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder on Friday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m.  Coffee and rolls will follow the service.  Please call Jan Einert at 303.442.2384 by Monday, March 3 for reservations, of if you need a ride from Golden West’s west door at 9:30 a.m.                                                                           Jan Einert
