RUMMAGE SALE 101

1.)        What to bring (or “how to make the lives of the wonderful volunteers easier”): Bring only items that are clean and in good working condition.  Please tie, tape, or bag together any items that have multiple parts.  When you collect items from neighbors and friends, please follow these same guidelines.   Bring useful treasures, not trash.

When possible, please box and label items left on the stage in Riley Hall.  This will help those who unpack as well as making items less tempting to unauthorized browsers.  No one expects you to box up unwieldy items like bikes and trikes, and furniture, etc.  Feel free to put prices on anything except clothing, shoes, cds, tapes and books, as those things have “standard” prices.  Keep in mind that items kept at your home until shortly before the sale are more secure than items left at the church ahead of time.  Clothing contributed on September 5 and 6 can be brought on hangers ready-to-hang on our sales racks.  This will save the volunteers many hours of time.

Let this event serve as an inspiration to you, your neighbors, and friends to weed out closets, garages, and basements.  Set those wonderful, yet no longer needed, items aside for the Rummage Sale.  Money earned from this sale all goes to the Disciple Mission Fund through our women’s group, Disciple Women.  Leftover product stays in the Boulder County community and benefits many people.  Think of our Rummage Sale as the gift that keeps on giving.

2.)        What NOT to bring (or “how to make the lives of the wonderful volunteers easier”): Please don’t bring torn or soiled clothing, worn out or run down shoes, soiled bedding, appliances that don’t work or have food left in them, toys or furniture with missing pieces.  Do not bring box springs or mattresses, waterbeds or bed frames but other furniture in good to excellent condition is welcome.  No draperies and drapery rods but curtains and curtain rods are fine.  Child safety seats and safety helmets cannot be resold so don’t bring them.  We prefer not to have computer equipment but if you do decide to bring computer related items, put your name on all the components so that we can return them to you if they do not sell.  If not sold, computer ware would cost the church to recycle.  Hard-sided heavy suitcases from a bygone era do not sell.  Bring only those that you would be willing to use!

3.)        What can you do to help (or “how to make the lives of the wonderful volunteers easier”):  Please mark the sale and set-up dates on you calendars now and plan to be a part of this major all church outreach endeavor

Dates of sale:  Friday and Saturday, September 7 and 8

Set up days:  Wednesday and Thursday, September 5 and 6

(Rummage Sale 101 continued)

These sales are always fun and make good money for outreach.  Please plan to participate in every way that you can:  donating, buying, and helping.

We’ll need good steady workers throughout the four days of preparation and sales.  We’ll especially need lots of energy and some brawn and MANY people for setting up Wednesday morning and at least twenty volunteers to help pack up the sale on Saturday afternoon.  When the sale ends, we’ll also be putting away equipment and delivering leftovers to various local charities.  Some deliveries to charity may need to take place on Saturday, September 8 and Monday, September 10.  Opportunities abound in other areas: accounting, marketing, publicity, pricing, sorting, stocking, bagging, customer service, receiving, sales, shipping (packing up), security, greeting, delivery and all!  There’s a chance to learn new skills and/or share your expertise at every turn.

Sign up sheets for volunteers will be available a few weeks before the sale or contact Kay Norris at 303.442.5081 or <kayfredwn@yahoo.com>.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE TO OUR YOUTH!

Many of us have either attended church camps and conferences during our youth or we have been involved in some way with the children and youth at FCC this summer who attended church camp at La Foret.

We have recently learned of a financial need and great opportunity to participate in meeting the $30,000 short-fall in funding for our regional camp and conference programs.  Through various efforts, 1/3 of this amount has been raised.  Gerry Hatler of Seattle, the brother of Gay Hatler, retired minister of First Christian Church in Colorado Springs, has graciously offered a $10,000 matching gift (ending in September) to the region to help with the remainder of this financial need.  This money is important for our region to in order to hire a camp director, and to enable those youth in our region attend camp whose families cannot afford for them to attend otherwise.

For the month of August only, we invite you to give to this matching gift as you are able and feel so inspired to.  Please mark your checks: “CRMR Camp and Conference,” and either make them payable to: FCC or to CRMR (with Camp and Conference noted), send to the church office or deposit in the offering tray on Sunday.

We thank you for your generosity to the various ministries and missions of our church!

OBSTACLES TO DISCERNMENT

At the Elders’ meeting following worship on 8/5 I was asked to include a list of obstacles to discernment that I included in my sermon that morning.  Here it is!

·         worry

·         “Me” – I have the most wonderful idea and we need to do it (ego)

·         procrastination

·         doing what is least offensive

·         doing what the loudest voice says

·         doing what the most belligerent says

·         tradition (we’ve always done it this way, it is easiest)

·         doing what we can afford (where’s the faith?)

·         democracy (sometimes the majority doesn’t know what’s best: example, congress)

These are out of context as you can see, but are good to get us thinking about what might be clouding our vision and/or our hearing for the future!

Blessings,

Terry

RENEWAL CONFERENCE

The Rocky Mountain Men’s Renewal Conference is September 21-23 in Estes Park at the YMCA of the Rockies.

As many of you know, we are serving 3 times the number of guests that we have in the past.  Our largest nights currently top out at over 130 guests.  We attribute a great deal of our success to awareness of our organization.  We also feel like the Boulder Change program is a huge attraction.  This program was developed to increase numbers and it is clearly working.  With our increase in numbers we are in need of additional supplies.  We are looking for several additions to our kitchen.  Some of the items we are looking for include: water pitchers, towels, mugs and silverware.  If you would like to make a donation please contact Scott Medina at <ThruSpirit@aol.com>.

BIKE GIVE-AWAY

Community Table has distributed 44 bikes in three separate give-aways this spring to our clients!  The bikes are given away during dinner on a first come first serve basis.  Each person receives a lock and helmet with their new bike.  The joy and gratitude from our clients cannot be described in words.  The organization continues to meet and exceed our goals of serving those in need.  Additional bike

give-a-ways will occur every two months as they become available.

Community Table has alliances with several groups that serve the clients.  Recycled Bicycles is a 12-year-old organization operated by a retired school teacher, Bruce Lien.  They are supported heavily by the Bicycle Village bike shops in Colorado.
