UPCOMING EVENTS

FCCafé – Sunday, May 6 – 9:30 a.m. – Topic: Moving to End Sexual Assault

Dr. Marti Hopper from MESA (Moving to End Sexual Assault), formerly known as the Boulder County Rape Crisis Team, will present information on understanding acquaintance rape, debunking myths, prevention strategies, and helping a friend or family member who has been sexually assaulted.

MAY 12TH WORK DAY REMINDER

The annual clean up day at the church is scheduled for May 12, 9-12 a.m.  Some work will be done inside, but most of the work will be cleaning up and trimming around the buildings.  Volunteers are needed to trim and clean out the flower beds on the south side; persons to weed and pull dead plants from the landscaping west of the building; as well as someone to trim bushes and haul away branches to recycling.  Also, items in the Education Building basement need to be removed.  As you’ve noted, there is a great need for people with clippers, rakes and a couple pickups to haul stuff.  Can you help?

The following quote was used in Rev. Zimmerman’s morning message 4/22/07.  He used it to illustrate how our culture might be more than a bit confused about the "values" that have made us a great nation.  The words come from Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s speech made at the University of Kansas on March 18, 1967.  (It is reprinted here by request of one of our members. TZ)

"Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things.  Our gross national product...if we should judge American by that - counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage.  It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them.  It counts the destruction of our redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl.  It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets.  It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.

"Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play.  It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials.  It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.  And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans."

LIFE & NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Congratulations to Maggie Haseman who was recently inducted into the Monarch High School’s National Honor Society for 2007-2008!  This organization selects members based on academic achievement as well as student involvement with service activities.  Maggie’s

participation in the group next year will expand her opportunities to give back to the

community.  We are so proud of Maggie.

Rumor has it that Pearl Grothe has returned to her Golden West apartment after an extended stay at Manor Care following a fall.

Thanks to all who donated cookies for our campus folks; especially thank you Carol Ashmore, Rosie Campbell and Carol Poore for dividing the goodies into individual care packages!  Eight FCC students received a package and twenty packages were sent to UMHE.

Esther Campbell was visited last week by her son, Paul, who is a professor at Harvard University!

Wine!  Trains!  Beautiful Colorado!  All were included in a recent trip shared by Mary &

Hugh and Ray & Jean Crowder!

Guess who traveled to Mexico to speed up his study of the Spanish language?  If you guessed Dennis Hubbard, you are correct!

A trip to Austin, Texas for Marcie Geissinger and Neil Ashby included watching grandchildren participate in sporting events plus a day trip to visit siblings.

Dawn and Brent Warkentine recently returned from an amazing vacation in Puerto Rico.  While they were there a friend from the Dominican Republic played golf with Brent.  The golf scores weren’t revealed, but a good time was had by all.

IN SYMPATHY

Our love and prayers are extended to Loretta Hempstead and Darrell Lemons and their families in the death of their mother, Clara Lemons on April 17th.  A celebration of life was held on April 21st with Rev. Zimmerman officiating.  Clara was 96 years old and had most recently been a resident of Boulder Manor.

GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK

Persons in the Boulder First Christian Church family were very generous in their giving to the Special Easter offering.  The total contributed was $1174, and it has been sent to the Church Finance Council to support the work of the Disciples Mission Fund that provides life-changing ministry from our doorsteps to the ends of the Earth.

THANKS SO MUCH!

The Outreach Committee

WE CELEBRATE NEW MEMBERS!

At the conclusion of worship on April 15th we welcomed Helen Wagner into our church family.  Helen, who has been attending FCC since January 1st, brings her membership from the Baptist Church.  She is an agent for State Farm Insurance.

On April 22nd, Zachary Poore came forward to become our newest member!  Although Zach participated in our Pastor’s Class this year, he opted out on baptism having been baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church tradition.

His decision to “officially” be part of our church family was a surprise to the congregation and especially to his grandmother, Carol Poore!

Please warmly welcome these two into our church community and life!

LET’S PARTY!

Pentecost will be here before we know it, and you certainly don’t want to miss this chance to celebrate.

What could be more exciting than a birthday?  May 27th is the date to celebrate the birthday of the church – Pentecost – and you’re invited to the party.  It’ll be a fun day with food and fellowship for all.  Save the date and practice harmonizing for the Happy Birthday song.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Dear Church Family,

To only say thank you seems like so little.  Your support over the last eleven months during John's illness gave our family great strength.  Thank you for the wonderful cards, phone calls and all the thoughts and prayers.  Also a big thank you to all the ladies for putting together a lovely buffet on such short notice after the memorial.  It's nice to be back and we look forward to meeting more of the congregation.

Sincerely,

Teri, Jack and Lindsay Stickle

Dear friends,

Many thanks for the prayers, cards, notes, hugs and good wishes I received upon my recent move.  I miss you all already!

Come see me in Loveland – we’ll walk the sculpture park together!

                                                                                                Love, Marj

Many Thanks…

FCC has received a card from the United Ministries in Higher Education (UMHE) students expressing their thanks for the meals we provided this semester.  Marcie Geissinger, Priscilla Gifford, Mary ann Pinon, Doris Martin, Kay Lowe-Wendling, Carol Poore, Carol Ashmore, Jeannine Henderson, and Barb Koshio all helped make these meals possible.  (I apologize if I missed anyone in this list!)

I’d also like to report that our congregation donated a total of $556 in response to the Sunday that the UMHE students provided our worship service.  Good job FCC!!

Finally I’d like to recognize and thank the Disciple Women and the Deborah-Rebekah Group

for donating to UMHE in response to their winter fundraising drive.

Heather Avens, UMHE Board Member
