CELEBRATION OF PENTECOST AT FCC
Mark May 11th on your calendar, a very special worship when we will as a congregation celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the church.
Prepare for Pentecost by thinking about these open-ended questions:
If you are moved by the Holy Spirit, send your answer(s) to these questions to Eleanor Hubbard, hubbarde@colorado.edu, 303.494.9718, so that they can be used in worship on May 11th.
Come to worship prepared to be ignited by the Pentecost fires, dress in red, participate fully in the service in whatever way you are moved to by the Holy Spirit. Celebrate the birthday of the church by sharing in our birthday cake after worship.
The Church Seasons
Pentecost (May
11)
Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to his disciples when he was no longer with them. Indeed, 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection this promise was fulfilled. As recounted in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit was experienced as a strong wind, as tongues of fire, and as a time when language differences were erased. It was clearly a powerfully dynamic, dramatic experience for Jesus’ followers, and not surprisingly one they wanted to share with others. In fact, they did so with great passion, and many came to them craving the same experience and were received into the early community of faith. Because we are reminded of this passion, the seasonal colors are red.
This early community prayed together, shared the common loaf and cup, and reminded each other of their experiences with Jesus and the Holy Spirit. For almost four months, we will be celebrating Pentecost during worship, and our seating will remind us of the intense community life that the early disciples experienced. It will also remind us to share weekly in our intense community life and to share the Good News we receive in worship with others. The early disciples were passionate about their faith, and throughout this season we too can be passionate about what we believe, what we experience, and what we share with others.
PENTECOST OFFERING
This year
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) celebrates the 207th Anniversary of
the Cane Ridge meeting. That huge
evangelical gathering, on what was then the American frontier, is regarded by
many as the place where the very roots of the Christian Church were planted.
Through the
years, the Disciples have been leaders in building educational institutions,
and in building programs that push the frontiers of caring. Disciples have been
leaders in preaching, teaching, social programs and more. Wherever the frontier, our church has been there.
Today, we’re
among the leaders in the mainline denominations in planting new churches. The “frontier” today may be in the inner city
or the suburbs. It may be peopled by
retirees needing a church, or first-generation Americans from a variety of nations,
or young families concerned about bringing up children with care and
values. Wherever that new frontier is,
our gifts to the Pentecost Offering help bring new churches there, and help
spread the ministry of the Disciples of Christ to new people and places. Since 2001, in response to the call in the
2020 Vision of the church, we have planted more than 530 new churches. That’s nearly 40,000 new Christians. This year, through the Pentecost Offering, we
are asked to join together and “Share the Chalice” to continue that work. Through the Pentecost Offering, we support the
New Church Ministry of the Disciples, throughout the nation, and right here in
our region.
Our
Pentecost Offering will be taken on May
4 and May 11. Please “Share the Chalice,” and multiply the
love.
Outreach Committee

Kudos and a big thanks to Carol Ashmore for
orchestrating the "Cookies for Finals" project. She mailed seven boxes of cookies to our
college students far and near and two boxes were delivered locally. There were enough cookies to share with CU
students who participate in PRISM.
Thanks to Doris Martin and Carol Poore for
helping with the packing, and a huge thank you to all of you who baked cookies.
A special gold star goes to Dustin and
the youth group who also baked cookies for this project. That was a delightful surprise.
Thank you so much for the cookies! They so far have been delicious. My finals aren't for another couple weeks but
they are definitely helping with the burnout blues. I am so ready to be done and on my way to
Love you all and miss
you terribly,

Great News, and a Great PRISM
Project to Support
At our tasty and successful fundraising Saturday, PRISM students shared
our mission to go to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and, with the help
of the nonprofit Re-member, to build a needed structure on the sacred
ceremonial grounds used by the nonprofit Thunder Valley Community Development
Corporation (www.thundervalley.org).
OUR NEW (?) MEMBER!
We’re not sure he qualifies as being “new” but our Youth Director, Dustin Adkins, came forward at
the conclusion of our service on April 20th to place his
Associate Membership with us! He will
retain membership at our sister church, South Broadway, in
Dustin has been on our staff since November of last year and wasted no time in endearing himself to both our youth and adult members. Listed below is information for your church directory. Welcome
(officially) Dustin!
