PALM SUNDAY AND EASTER
BAPTISMS!
Five members of our Pastor’s Class on church membership made their confession of faith, were baptized and united with our congregation during Holy Week!
On Palm Sunday, James (Jimmy) Howe, son of Jim and Becky Campbell-Howe and Eric Thompson, son of David and Vickie Thompson were baptized during morning worship.
On Easter morning, Leanna Landis, daughter of Carrie Landis-Hausfather; Patrick Rios, son of Mary and Willie Rios; and Alie Wilkins-Crowder, daughter of Barbara and Jeff Wilkins-Crowder, were also baptized.
Rev. Barbara Wilkins-Crowder had the honor of receiving Alie’s confession of faith while Rev. Zimmerman received the others.
IT WAS A GLORIOUS EASTER!
What a wonderful Easter celebration we shared! Breakfast, baptisms, the egg hunt, incredible music and every seat filled – what a tremendous way to observe this special day in the Christian year! Smiles, organ music, guests of family and friends added to the day’s festivities!
Thanks to the music staff, the choir, the Worship Committee and the Diaconate for making the day extra special!

Our thanks to Jeannine Henderson who “spruced up” all the centerpieces on the tables for the Easter morning breakfast – washing and bleaching all the lace doilies and re-assembling the flowers. They’ll be ready now for many other occasions to come!
Jeannine is also responsible for the new, colorful baptismal gowns – the colors of the rainbow – to remind us of God’s promise that a rainbow will always follow the rain. And to the boys and girls who were baptized Palm Sunday and Easter the newly tinted robes were a memorable symbol of their promise to God and the future of the church.

COOKIES
FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
The Disciples New Women’s Group is sponsoring the “Cookies for College Students” project again this year. We will be sending cookies to all FCC college students wishing them “good luck” on their final exams. If we have enough cookies, we would like to send some to the UMHE (United Ministries in Higher Education) CU students also. If anyone in the congregation would like to participate in this project with us, please contact Carol Ashmore at 720.304.2113 or e-mail by April 20th and plan to bring two dozen cookies to church on Sunday, April 22nd.

Just when you think that all is going well, things start falling apart. At least that is true for my home and, unfortunately, also true for the church right now. Think water and heat, our two current nemeses. Our boiler in the sanctuary building had various problems costing us about $6400. The heating system also had various problems: a variety of joint leaks and some do-hickey in the water diverter at JOYCARE. That diverter allows the thermostat to send hot water into the heat fins for heat. This cost several hundred dollars to repair. Then there is the basement flood issue. Since we don’t use the west room in the basement of the education building often, we didn’t discover the minor flood and water running full force for about two days. This happened due to a failed pressure relief valve in the hot water heater. This cost several hundred more dollars. After that was cleaned up and fixed, the city water department disabled and then turned on a new main water connection. Unfortunately, the infamous “someone” had turned off the pressure reducer valve and the water was bypassing the pressure reducer valve and flowed into the buildings with the full city-line force. The ensuing water surge damaged the flush valves in two toilets in the education building and they flushed for over two hours before we could get them shut off.
Just in case there had not been enough water damage, the mysterious water gremlins caused the middle toilet in the women’s restroom in the sanctuary building to come loose and waste-water ran all over the floor. Fortunately, the plumber could repair those items on the same trip, but there went a few more dollars.
Oh yes, one more water issue. After we painted and sealed the baptistery and filled it, we found (by accident) that the drain valve didn’t hold and the water had drained out. Fortunately, this was discovered on Saturday. The valve was replaced and voila, there was water for the baptisms. Then there was the water pipe to the sinks in the changing room. The cold water had been disconnected at some time and when the cold and hot water faucets were turned on together, the hot water ran thru the cold water faucet onto the floor. This, fortunately, was repaired in-house and only cost the church the parts.
This has been some six weeks. All of this flowing water resulted in last month’s water bill being about triple, and with the new water schedule, the water bill is very high this month.
Oh ya, I almost forgot the heating pumps. There are two circulating heat pumps in each building. One is good and the second needs repair in each building. Aware of FCC’s plans to move out soon, the HVAC mechanical company suggested we use the good pump until it starts to fail and then repair the worst one. That is about $1,000 a pump. One more item—not a biggie: as a result of the steam damage next to the dishwasher several months ago, one of the doors under the kitchen sink is falling off. Small stuff, but they all add up. How soon can we move? The upside is that we don’t plan to stay in our facility too much longer, and Chanin Development can deal with all these problems. So let’s celebrate!
UPDATE ON
PROPERTY
Chanin has completed some redesign concepts based on the meeting with Golden West representatives on March 23rd, and a meeting of the representatives of First Christian, Golden West, and Chanin will be scheduled soon. At this meeting, Chanin will present the redesigns based on the suggestions made by Golden West. When agreement is reached on these redesigns, we expect due diligence will be complete.

Our sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Emma Slater who recently died at Boulder Manor from complications of cancer. Emma was a resident of Golden West and a member of our church.
