Offer made on new location!

On March 31st, the church made an offer to purchase the St. Luke’s Orthodox Church property at 1700 Stonehenge Drive, near the corner of Hwy 287 and Arapahoe Road.  This offer was made based upon recommendation from the Site Selection Committee and approved by the Board.  St. Luke’s has told us that they will need until April 21st to respond to our offer.

This offer is contingent upon approval by the congregation, and on a general building inspection and an energy audit.  Before a final congregational vote, there will be additional opportunities to tour the building.  Don’t start packing just yet – the sale would not close until fall of 2009, to coordinate both with St. Luke’s plans and with the sale of our current property.

If you have any questions about the St. Luke’s property, feel free to contact any member of the Site Selection Committee: Becky Campbell-Howe, Janet Barriger, Eleanor Hubbard, or Erik Mason.

Please keep everyone involved in this process in your prayers over the coming weeks.

LIFE AND NEWS OF THE CONGREGATION!

Congratulations! Shawn Crowder has been named to the Deans’ List for the fall 2007 semester!  Shawn is a student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Mixed feelings for us: Kendra Colyar shared with the congregation that she will be moving to San Diego to begin a “real job” following graduation from CU this spring.  We are happy for her but hate to see her leave Boulder.

The same can be said of Erica Haseman who will begin an internship in Long Beach, CA soon after her graduation from CSU.

Keith Lance reports that his recent trip to the East Coast for Spring Homes Tours was, once again, a joyous event!  Keith makes such trips annually.

Unless you’re prepared for an exuberant and un-Reader’s Digest version response, don’t ask Linda Abel about her recent Caribbean cruise!

COOKIES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

The Disciple Women are again sponsoring the "Cookies for College Students" project.  We will be mailing cookies to our college students to let them know we are thinking of them and to wish them good luck on finals.

Our college students this year are: Kendra Colyar, Shawn Crowder, Erica Haseman, Blake Howard, Michelle Manica, Christine Morris, and Aimee Shepherd.

If you would like to participate, please bring two dozen cookies to church Sunday, April 13, or bring them to the church office by 10:00 a.m. on April 14. Any extra cookies will be given to CU students at PRISM (formerly UMHE, United Ministries in Higher Education).

Please call or e-mail me ahead of time if you plan on bringing cookies. Thank you.

Did you notice?

The Worship Committee is working very hard this year to make small changes in our worship and worship space for the purpose of enlivening our worship and encouraging worship attendance.  We hope you have noticed some (or all) of them.  Some hints:  Holy Humor Sunday (a first for us), decorations on Easter, little “donkeys” distributing palms on Palm Sunday, the sanctuary chairs creating new space on each of the seasons of the church year, information in the bulletin and The Ram’s Horn about each of the liturgical seasons, diaconate sitting during the first part of communion hymn and singing along, and the pulpit re-designed and “perked up,” to mention just a few.  What things have you noticed?

We on the Worship Committee think change is good!  We like to try new ways to worship, and we think that “playing” with our worship and our worship space will help the congregation to prepare for the many changes we will have as we move to our new sanctuary.

We also know that for every change some members will find that it enhances their worship and for others it will diminish their worship experience.  By the way, this is also true for things we have done “forever,” like using the Lord’s Prayer as part of the invocation every Sunday.  Our goal is to make every worship service meaningful and a time and place to honor and celebrate intense feelings and thoughtful reflections while we are worshipping God.  The only way we can find out whether our changes are achieving these goals is for you to tell us what enhances your worship life and what diminishes the experience.

Your Worship Committee wants to hear from you.

Members of the Worship Committee: Eleanor Hubbard, chair (303.494.9718; hubbarde@colorado.edu); Barb Wilkins-Crowder (303.665.3508; wcjandb@juno.com), Charles Haseman (303.665.9775; greenman@indra.com), Peggie Hudiburg, elder’s liaison (303.499.9435; peggiehudiburg@comcast.net); Debbie Manica, diaconate’s liaison (303.666-8868, deb.manica@qwest.com) Our staff members: Terry Zimmerman, Dustin Adkins, Jeff Hogan, and Becca Hirsch, can of course be reached at the church office: 303.442.1861, fccboulder@fcc-boulder.org.

Thanks to all those who help us worship

Of course, as always, we very much appreciate the hard work of the choir, and the ministerial and music staff, the diaconate and the elders who create our worship experience weekly.  There is so much going on “behind-the-scenes” that makes it possible for each of us in the congregation to worship each Sunday, and we thank all of those who make it possible every Sunday.

We also want to thank some special people for their contributions to our worship experience:

Terry-for thinking of, designing, and pulling off our Holy Humor Sunday.  Becca - for choosing just the right song for the choir to sing and Keith - for prayers and scripture readings that enhanced Holy Humor Sunday.  Peggie, Dennis, Dave M., Charles H., - for decorating for Easter Sunday, draping the large cross with cloth and the small cross on the communion table with flowers, and arranging our lilies and spring flowers.  Charles - for re-designing the front of the sanctuary and for getting a crew together to create

our new space, re-designing and creating our new pulpit out of our old one, and also for re-arranging the sanctuary chairs for each liturgical season.

SAME SONG…NEW VERSE

Here are the words to the choir "anthem" on Holy Humor Sunday, sung to the tune "Immortal, Invisible."

Immoral, impossible, God only knows

How basses and tenors, sopranos, altos

At service on Sunday sound rarely the same

As those who last Sunday to choir practice came.

Unready, unable to sight-read the notes,

Nor counting, nor blending, they tighten their throats.

The descant so piercing is soaring above

The melody only a mother could love.

They have a director, but no one knows why.

No one in the choir deigns to turn her an eye.

It's clear by her waving she wants them to look,

But each of them stands with his nose in the book.

Despite the offenses, the music rings out.

The folks in the pews are enraptured, no doubt.

Their faces are blissful, their thoughts are so deep,

But it is no wonder, for they are asleep!
